It went to court and they got a $700 fine, no demerit points. Also got an automatic loss of licence for 28 days when it first happened. Just seems a really light fine for the speed they were going.

The 28 day thing is normal. The fine sounds about right, but I would also expect something like a 3 - 6 month license suspension, unless they had a really convincing story about why the speed was justified/necessary etc.

They should have gotten a suspension of licence for a few months

Where did you find out what the person got in court?

The person involved told my husband.

For various reasons I have reservations of the validity of the speeding drivers claim, it would be maybe rnot impossible but very rare outcome, in addition to the penalties mentioned I would expect them to receive 50 demerits

They shouldn't receive any demerits because they should be walking after losing their licence.

UK. Man jailed for 21 months for doing 189mph on a motorbike - and videoing himself! Also ran red lights, doing wheelies and driving on the wrong side of the road. (He also pleaded guilty to assisting an offender in the retention of stolen goods.)

Considering 189mph is over 300km/h I would hope so.

The cops were really surprised too.

In NZ you would have to kill a bus-load of nuns and orphans to get that sort of jail time.

I say bullshit on that one . a speed like that would normally entail front page headlines and a six month minimum loss of license
It's not fair is it. I've been speeding for 47 years and never been caught!

Was this the one where the driver claimed his kids were in danger or something along those lines and he had to get home in a hurry but didn't realize "how fast his flash new commodore was"?
And the cops decided not to pursue a suspension or confiscation much to the surprise of the judge?
annie17111,

Nope not this one. Young guy with no kids and not in a commodore.
saxman99,

OK then he's pretty lucky I guess.
annie17111,

Yeah I guess. But I doubt he learnt anything from it. Not the first time he has been in trouble with driving.

the original issue was the punishment the driver received. This newspaper clipping doesnt mention this
