Brand new fridge

meow_mix, Aug 21, 3:57am
I recently had my 1993 Legacy RS twin turbo serviced at Ray Hartley Motors in Wellington city. They told me the top-mount intercooler is damaged, many of the fins are bent down, don't know why, must be just old. They said this is stopping airflow into the intercooler and they think this might have caused the primary turbo to overheat.

They are having trouble sourcing a secondhand intercooler, and they said they can't get a new one from Subaru as it is an obselete car. Do any of the Jap tuning houses like HKS, Blitz etc make aftermarket intercoolers for this car? Bearing in mind it is a twin turbo so the intercooler is a twin entry one.

Turbos are designed to take a lot of heat, if the intercooler isn't working properly then this would only increase the temperature by a few degrees, would this be enough to overheat the primary turbo?

well its getting more and more a problem of no parts and no nothing available in nz.
Some is to do with being obsolete. some is to do with lazyness.
But its also to do with how retarded and backwards the whole business structure of the GST is in this country.
They have you beleave its everywhere like this its not.
So whats the problem Well the government thugs johnny boy keys made it that everyone who onsells goods to new zealand has to collect the gst for the thugs gang who call them selfs crown . collect and pass the tax on to them.
So what does every country say . up yours no delivery to new zealand retards. problem solfed for them.

kazbanz, Aug 21, 4:26am
Ida thunk you could get a decent replacement from the wreckers.

intrade, Aug 21, 4:30am
now how does it work everywhere else on the planet. Exept retardistan
aka new zealand and stralia.
The rest of the world every business is 0 tax rated for vat, gst ,mwst. wust what ever the name is every country has one and its all 0 reated with proof of business number of the registerd company .
only when selling to end user this tax is added .
But in retardistan we have to pay it and claim it . like that guy who did try and claim a few millions of fictios GST . its Really lala land here .
Ok that part is now explained .
You can try and look in ireland at miscksgarage for a intercooler or usa Reockauto.com.
Germany rexbo has closed its doors and the only low cost only ships to australia from germany . and the others who do ship international have a one off flat shipping fee of 176 euro or there abouts to new zealand.

So you could book a trip to europe 1800$ with emirates and join me at automechanika 11- 16 september and take a intercooler in your suitcase home . for example free to import you can bring 700$ worth of goods in free thru the airport .

Not the right one
Mishimoto legacy intercooler
https://www.mishimoto.com/automotive/intercoolers.html https://www.mishimoto.com/mishimoto-subaru-legacy-turbo.html After market performance would be expensive
getting pulse performance in wanganui to custom modify one etc
https://plazmaman.com/ (aus - no plans for 850hp +?) Might have something you could modify. https://www.pwr.com.au/products/intercoolers

Ask mrt or other subbie specilaists around, if any in back shed.

intrade, Aug 21, 4:31am
i would not bother i replaced the intercooler on the clients cdi the secound time this time we fitted a nissen He had his german mother onship it .

intrade, Aug 21, 4:33am
only othe roption there is people making coolers you could get one made to fit fully alloy welded if they are still in business . i think i had a quote 700$ so be a grand now as that was 10 years ago

meow_mix, Aug 21, 4:34am
I'd prefer to get a brand new one, but Ray at the garage said Subaru Japan won't stock any as parts because it is an old car. They have tried many parts places for a secondhand one in good condition but still no luck.

msigg, Aug 21, 4:37am
Yes you need a good clean intercooler for good airflow, as above wreckers or good aftermarket model, Do some google search yourself and have a look, also look at some subaru forums. Good luck.Otherwise painstakingly clear all the holes and bend the fins back, trim them off. Need good airflow.

Primary turbo overheating?

Or is that the aftermarket exhaust installed letting it overspeed?

bigfatmat1, Aug 21, 4:47am
if its only cooling fins bent down. straighten them with a pick. provided its not rotten. No it would not cause turbo to overheat its after the turbo. However a few degrees increase would cause a less dense charge. if the turbo has over heated its more likely a oil feed blockage. common

meow_mix, Aug 21, 4:49am
Exhaust is standard but with a Fujitsubo aftermarket muffler at the back, I've heard the horror stories about adding big bore exhausts on these cars.

snoopy221, Aug 21, 4:50am
Fer sure there are a few years of roos that have a few odd ball parts.

Have yet to see an intercooler being 2 intercoolers in one as in a twin entry with2 separate coolers for primary and secondary turbo.
[Have seen twin entry simply with better flow characteristics]

And bent fins are only in the air to air cooling of the actual heated air after the turbo.

Tis very very much a quantum leap to the fins having caused a primary turbo failure I M O and essentially the intercooler is ONLY cooling the heated charge after the turbo to densify it and pack more in to the engine.
Not generally associated with the cooling of the turbocharger itself as the heated gases have long since left the turbocharger and don't cool and go BACK to cool the turbocharger.

Sounds and smells like big $$$$$$. Your short arms and deep pockets are going to be a problem. Lots of cheap Fiat Puntos for sale, you could Trade UP.

budgel, Aug 21, 8:50pm
I think your best bet is to buy something aftermarket that can be adapted to fit.

fridgies use fin straightners all the time bit like a comb

elect70, Aug 21, 11:57pm
+1 i used to dothat for unavailable A/C condesors on cars . afterwards wash it with pressure washer . Should at least keep you going until can find a replacement .

meow_mix, Aug 22, 4:19am
Thanks for the replies guys, Ray at the garage is still looking for a second hand one, if he can't find one I'll talk to him about an aftermarket one. Maybe an intercooler from the later Legacy B4 RSK could be adapted to fit.

meow_mix, Aug 24, 6:38am
Update: Ray has found a secondhand intercooler in good condition, it only costs $110 + fitting, my car is going in next week to have it installed. Problem solved!

snoopy221, Aug 24, 6:40am
Sweet good outcome hopefully ya ! new fridge! can chill bearsies and ya primary turbo.

tweake, Aug 24, 6:49am
not one bit.

i'm not sure if its garage making more work for themselves or mix up on terms.
to overheat a turbo you need to increase the heat which is usually fueling issues.
but turbo's can carbon up if its run hard and shut down quickly. the oil cooks in it.
sometimes called "coked up".

if it actually overheated the other ways is lack of oil cooling and blocked up intake (clogged air filter) can do it a bit.

but for a standard car i very much doubt it overheated a turbo.

meow_mix, Oct 18, 4:57am
He said the turbo "might" have been overheated due to the damaged intercooler, I have to listen to what he says, Ray Hartley Motors are the Subaru specialists in Wellington, they really know their stuff.
