Labour Weekend traffic

Labour Week traffic is often epic by NZ standards.

Checkout the UK traffic disruption in this article.

Yea I know about those jams, even on a friday afternoon we did heathrow to exiter, should take 3 hours, took me nearly 6 hours that was 10 weeks ago, all around uk now motorway traffic is bad, sometimes you have a good run ,like sunday morning where you can move it, other times you just come to a stand still, even the main back roads are so full it's frustrating, that's what comes from too many people and cars, that's why we need to stop immigration.

Much of the traffic problem could be halved if they put traffic lights on pedestrian crossings. Even employed wardens to only allow pedestrians to cross every few minutes. Currently, pedestrians wander across like Brown's cows, and the traffic builds up and up and up. Just as one person clears the crossing, another enters it. With controlled crossings, vehicles would get a decent opportunity to keep moving and there would be far less traffic buildup.

We are on SH1, north of the SH7 turnoff. Kaikoura road is open and traffic is the busiest I have heard for a long time.

Too many rich people around now as they can all afford cars.

No more coach trips to the holiday destinations.

Should up the open road speed limit to 150kph, then we'd spend a third less time on the road and there would be fewer hold ups.

Agree entirely. Double your speed through intersections and halve the time spent in the high risk zone.

And the ultimate proof - passenger/Km deaths in planes is waaaay lower than cars.

So true, back in the 60's our family would go visit grandma and pa for xmas every year. We went by railcar or bus. Anyone remember those old Newmans Ansair busses?

and school trips in the Midland's bus.

The only car race meetings we could get to in the UK were Bank Holiday meetings when Barton's ran an 'excursion' to Mallory Park from the centre of Nottingham! Now and again, Dad managed to grab the firm's van, but that was a rarity.

Getting my own transport at 18 (old motorbike) made a huge difference.

Are you the writer at Tui Brewery for their billboards?! Traffic lights hold up traffic long after the pedestrian has cleared the crossing as they have to cater for the worst case scenario (think a class of primary school children or an elderly person with a dodgy hip) If you wanted to improve then put an island in the middle of the crossing so that once they have cleared your half you can move on.

To improve holiday traffic they need to target people that don't pull over when they should, failing to keep left and just unleash hell on people that increase speed (albeit subconsciously) in passing lanes.

UK used to have 'Pelican' crossings not so long ago. Pedestrian lights go green, traffic , red, then after a few seconds, pedestrian lights go red, but traffic goes flashing amber. Slow pedestrians already on the crossing can continue, but if clear, traffic proceeds.

Not sure if they still have them, but they seemed to work OK.

Equally, here, we have blasted red arrow right turns everywhere, when the road is perfectly clear, as we are deemed incapable of judging when it is safe to turn.

purplegoat, Oct 23, 9:50am
With thinking like that I nominate you for Prime Minister . or at least Minster for transport .

_peas, Oct 23, 11:10pm
Red turn arrows are near the top of my shit list. I have been in touch with AT about why they can't just extinguish after a certain time period allowing you to turn if its clear and was told that they are put in to conform to some overseas rule that we adopted that say if there is more than two lanes opposing you then it is deemed that you can't see the way is clear properly as some traffic opposing you might be stopped to turn right as well. It is a total load of bollocks in many cases.

I wouldn't have thought that a policeman with a laser who targeted the front car of a train of traffic to ensure they were doing at least ball park speed limit on a straight piece of road would be that hard to work out.

We headed north on Saturday morning and witnessed a Nissan Tiida (pretty common culprit along with Toyota Prius's) sitting in the RH lane keeping pace with the traffic in the LH lane. They had ample opportunity to pull into the LH lane but continued sitting there until a Jeep Cherokee got so far up their arse he just about popped out through their bonnet! They then panicked and had to merge into a LH lane that didn't really have any gaps there anymore. Everyone brakes to let them in and the chaos resumes. I'm actually fairly interested in how traffic behaves and the impacts of certain types of drivers.

Me too. I must look up a website I saw years ago with some good animations of how traffic reacts.

Here you are:

That's a pretty cool idea. Look out SW motorway in the afternoons.
