Nelson has hundreds most nights, especially over summer months. Every carpark, layby, river edge is covered,often to capacity, by vans and tents. Sure, not all leave their rubbish and crap(literally!), but plenty do so. Tried to go for swim at the river last summer, couldn;t even find a park for a motorbike for all the vans/tents,, tried to walk down track to river to find it covered in crap and toilet paper, even on the river bank. Diidn't fancy a swim after that.

Some places they carry out random inspections of camper vans parked up & if no waste containment system in it are booted off . They do it often on the Sunbird coastal strip at Kaiaua Miranda . as its mandatory .
