Henry--PLEASE read my advice. Give the windows a darn good clean inside and out then take the car to the station and ask for a light meter reading on the windows. Tint fail has to be quantified to be legal--ie you need the light meter reading. --You can go to a dozen places to get their opinion it won't do you any good. Fact is that unless you want to pay for another WOF test you have to be at or below that 35% mark.)or above I get the numbers backwards)

From the photos linked, it looks a lot like 5% which is a fail.
That's the law, just comply with it. Or persuade your MP to get a law change underway to suit you .
I can guess which one of these options is more realistic.
For further education, learn what tint rules apply to which category of vehicle, as there is a huge amount of incorrect information which people like repeating to each other, carrying on the circle of ignorance.
Gutting really. That tint is awesome. Makes the thing feel like a limo.

tints are very commonly done so thieves don't see whats in the car. i also found it helps keep the heat down.
if you need to see through a vehicle to drive safely then your driving really badly.

Are you sure its not factory? It looks no different than the factory tints on the sides of my Subaru from the drivers door back, didnt look at all the photos but was the rear screen tinted that dark too? I had my rear screen and front 2 side windows tinted too 35%, never had any poblems

Probably not a very good pic due to light but this is the factory 5% tints on mine with 35% aftermarket on the drivers door, had a look at your pics the back window tint definitely is'nt standard https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/823493086.jpg

My WOF tester says that VTNZ like to fail on tinted windows. Go somewhere else.

Best you and your VTNZ mates who think you are the authority on bloody everything go lobby NZTA to make them illegal then instead of making fluffy TV ads about yourselves that make you look like complete muppets and somehow public friendly, that's deceptive too isn't it?. I've not in my experience seen a vehicle fitted with the labels that looked like it was tinted too dark EVER, and not seen the reason to order a light meter test, no pro installer is likely to state something complies when it doesn't.

heck guys this isn't helping the OP. he has three options. Clean the windows and ask for a lightmeter test. Try his luck elsewhere or peel the tints off. Its pretty clear cut.

VTNZ are idiots and only went once in 2002 but never again, but that happens when the govt hands them the reins

Turns out it's sitting at 3%

So I guess you will go back to the original inspector ( who I am not mates with) and thank him for his correct outcome.

Are the ceramic window tints worth the expense? e.g https://www.autotintz.co.nz/automotive-tinting/ Be interesting to see the (transmittance of the) tints/ blinds used in the rentals subaru wagons in the south island http://anzed.co.nz/subaru/ UK solution removable window screens for summer. http://www.blinds4cars.com/ I see the bmws have a variety have a variety of window blinds for the Mediterranean countries Spain, Italy. Portugal etc.

Those are likely factory which is allowed to be very dark compared to an overlay
