Mona Blades Case

I have no idea why the police have always shown a photo of a Datsun 1200 and said that they were looking for a Datsun 120Y. an entirely different looking car!
If they could not even get the car right, what chance did they have in solving the case. Anyone else agree?

electromic, Jul 29, 12:12am
Agree. Unfortunately police get details wrong sometimes. I was in a nose to tail with a mitsi sigma and the police report said the car was a ford cortina. When I suggested in court that the police report was inaccurate, the judge said that police don't make mistakes and that I was wrong.

According to this the police interviewed every datsun owner in NZ at the time.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/105798719/cold-case-mona-blades-detective-reveals-why-he-changed-his-mind-about-being-a-part-of-the-series Probably one of those early in the case - false narrow case enquiry pathways taken that causes a delay from which the investigation gets weakened from?

What other cars had a similar colour at the same era? mazda 808 s/w?

My reply to that, (addressing the Judge) " what if, I were to say that the police think your a push over and you cannot think for yourself " ( Judge replies ) ." then I'd find you in contempt of court and either fine you or give you 3 months imprisonment " ( I reply) " Then I won't say it "

Fairly typical both with police and media. A few minutes ago on TV1, a VT Commodore wedged under a bus was described as a Honda.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 29, 4:28am
That's when you make a transcript request, that judge shouldn't be sitting.

esky-tastic, Jul 29, 5:16am
I noticed that too, what idiots!

amasser, Jul 29, 8:23pm
Good one! Reminds me of a Frederick Forsyth story where the defendant rubbished a reporter for incompetence, drunkenness, etc. and was protected by saying it in court. Judges may not have a similar sense of fair play.

budgel, Jul 29, 11:54pm
I noticed that. My guess is that it was taken from a verbal transcript and Holden was misheard as Honda. If you aren't a car person you don't notice such things.

dajoki, Jul 30, 12:04am
I thought they caught up with one of the owners of a Datsun and shot him under a school room or some such thing. he was supposed to be a suspect and after shooting him i thought it would be all over. i wonder what happened to change it.

or the time in court the cops couldn't tell the difference between a viva and a valiant

laurelanne, Jul 30, 7:38am
Just watched it.To much paper work and somebody has to decide what direction the investigation should take. I remember the big debate about whether it was a Datsun 1200 or a 120Y. They have now thrown a big spanner in the works showing photos of a Datsun 1600 stationwagon.

My dad drove a gold Hillman Hunter station wagon in those days and drove the Napier Taupo road regularly. He was interviewed by the police.

the-lada-dude, Jul 30, 5:35pm
Let's face it, . the cops were on the wrong trail and bushed, so the asked a passing HUNTER which way to go, .

I wasn't paying 100% attention to the program but didn't they realise that the photo of Mona Blades used at the time probably didn't show her current hair style and the Police didn't know she knew some people that were also in Taupo at the time. She may have been killed in Taupo and all the hitch hiking leads weren't relevant.

How much range did police radios have at the time, pre-cell phones?
Shadow patrols of bikie gangs with little chance of back up does not sound overly safe.

azzab54, Jul 31, 9:43pm
Maybe the police are just dredging up the case to refresh the publics minds ? Look what response it has got on here !
Same as the unsolved murder in Wainuiomata a while ago which made the tv recently. They are putting the squeeze on someone that knows soething i reckon.

We had an orange Datsun in the shop at that time. 'Ding' Bell and another cop came in and wanted to take it away. The boss wouldn't let them until the owner was contacted.
Knowing the owner, they knew it was a waste of time, but it had to be done.

laurelanne, Aug 1, 6:37am
Apparently, all owners of orange Datsun wagons who were put through the hoops by the cops at the time have an annual reunion. I must catch up with the guy I know and see what he thinks about these new revelations. He said he dropped his car in for servicing and the cops nabbed it.

franc123, Aug 1, 6:59am
Yes and the suspect person with the information is known to the cops and is known to have been an associate of hers. The random pickup from a guy in a Datsun wagon is an orange herring., there was never any proof that her or that car or its driver were ever on the NT highway?

201, Aug 2, 1:52am
Why on earth would owners of Datsun wagons who didn't know each other from all around the country have an annual reunion? to discuss if they have ever been contacted again in the last 40+ yrs? what a load of bollocks !

greenfox, Aug 2, 7:34am
from memory a guy who was a bit of the loaner hired a Datsun in Auckland over the same weekend Mona went missing and returned it with only a few K's on the clock. The rental agency suspected it was driven a lot further as it came back very dirty but he had disconnected the speedo. Back then speedo cables were not sealed on rental cars. The car had a lot of pumice under it too. He then went to a posh girls school in Auckland, shot a girl then went under a building and shot himself. There were no mourners/relations at his funeral. Only the undertaker and a policeman. The rumour I heard was Auckland police solved the case but the local cops wanted the thunder so they discounted this guy.
