CV boot

What does it cost in labour to replace one. Ive watched the utube videos which are useful. If I buy a boot expanding tool ($35) and then a clip tightening tool $53 my costs are $90 before starting on the messy job. The alternative is the Dorman split cv boot from ebay which looks ok but why bother with that method anyway.Cheers

Both options you have alluded to are not the best for replacing CV boots. You are far better off removing the CV joint and fitting a standard CV boot. Stretchy boots tend to be short lived, and split join boots tend to split again. Labour cost varies depending on make/model, inner/outer and siezed/unsiezed

The other thing you are not doing with that method is cleaning the joint out properly before regreasing it, if the boot has been gone for some time you can imagine what state what grease left in it could be in. Repairs associated with steering and suspension should also be carried out under the supervision of someone experienced. In most instances it shouldn't cost more than $150 all up just to do one boot at a garage.

Yep some jobs are just easier to leave to the experts. They have the gear, the hoist and their overalls are already greasy.

Actually in the real world, stretchy boots last longer than standard CV boots. That could be a quality issue though, I use good stretchies to use with a gynaecologist tool.

I see you are local. Any chance I could borrow that tool.

I have done it before but with the entire mechanism out of the car. So Im used to working on cars, but I dont want to get too dirty.
