How much can I expect to pay in ruc for a diesel ute.
Given the cost of diesel compared to the cost difference to petrol .
Is it worth the change

under 3.5 tonne is 6.2cents per km.

mber2, Aug 4, 4:47am
given that cost including rego and diesel for 10'000km roughly per year would be an extra $620

Double check on the cost of rego for a diesel ute

If your thinking of buying a new diesel, then be aware that they all run DPF's. . in a few years time, it'll be the biggest nightmare you've ever seen.

Around $70 per 1000

mrcat1, Aug 4, 5:55am
At that distance unless your towing something heavy all the time then you would be better off with something petrol.

smallwoods, Aug 4, 7:04am
10,000 km per year would be around $1700 per year fuel cost.
Ranger at 13ltrs/100km @ $1.30/ltr
Plus the $620 = $2320/10000km

Petrol would have to be better than $23.20/100km or 10ltrs/100km

Rego for a diesel ute is just over $180 as of August and the new ranger is 8.9/100 there is a reason you don't see petrol utes anymore petrol has bad fuel economy
Also I am using my fathers car as I wrote my ute off and it is costing $26/100km and it has a smaller engine 2.8 where my ute was a 3.2

Current rates are here:

https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/licensing-rego/road-user-charges/ruc-rates-and-transaction-fees/

There will be a minor increase (amount not yet known) in on October 1st.

Generally for large, un-aerodynamic vehicle like utes, larger vans etc have lower running costs on diesel. Part of this is due to the way petrol is taxed per liter, and diesel RUC's are charged per km. Anything burning over aproxx 8L/100km (real world of petrol would pay less tax if it was diesel powered.

Because of the above very few brands even sell petrol Utes in NZ anymore, as such if you are looking for a new ute, your only option is diesel, unless you like the great wall Steed that is. (if you are looking for a used one there are more options.

Regarding running costs of a petrol ute, Toyota used to offer a 4.0L 185kW V6 in the hilux 4x4. rated fuel consumption 12L/100, and the journalist of the below artical got 14.7 L/100km on test.

14.7L/100km over 10,000km at $2.20 a liter = $3234

Thats an extra $1000 a year over small-woods diesel example. (note that rego and maintenance is cheaper so you will claw back a few hundred dollars).

If you are doing a lot of towing, of plan on mounting big mud tires, your real world fuel consumption will be way higher, making being on diesel more important. If range matters to you, a diesel ute will go further on a tank. If refinement is important, a v6 petrol ute will be a quieter, and a better drive.

What vehicle are you running at the moment?

You missed rego, a diesel car costs about $70 more a year to register due to how ACC is charged.

You can't buy a petrol ute anymore unless you want a Suzuki Jimny, or a Geatwall steed.

It's not easy to compare diesel & petrol options unless you are running both versions of the same vehicle doing the same exact workload.

Yes I could be running the petrol version of my Nissan Caravan for the workload it gets but the fact that my .
Daily trips are cheaper
It doesn't really care about loads up to 1t
It's built to handle heavy loads all the time
Even at 1t loaded, it is still pretty much just the same to drive as it is when unloaded
Even at 1t loaded, extra fuel consumption to compensate for the load, isn't noticeable.
The whole vehicle including the engine is built tougher for the expected workload
It has a better resale value
If it had a high snorkel, it wouldn't really care about the engine compartment getting flooded & currently doesn't care about hitting unexpected deep puddles that would kill most petrol vehicles.

& I do most of my own servicing.

" petrol has bad fuel economy "
Correction.
Petrol vehicles have bad fuel economy when loaded

Don't know where you get the 13/100km for a Ranger from. Ours is around 11.

msigg, Aug 4, 8:10pm
As above they do on average about 10 - 11, very hard to get the acclaimed 8-9 , But even the petrol is hard to achieve the acclaimed as well so the comparisons are the same anyway, just use the higher figures. Each to their own, lots of stop start and loaded a diesel is better for me.

andrewcg53, Aug 5, 1:31am
A diesel will use 15 to 20% less fuel than a petrol

smallwoods, Nov 5, 2:07am
Will pull the files when I get back to the ute.
Just done some trips to Auckland and did mileage runs.
