Just love the explanation in the Q & A for the "false" number plates. Presume the seller is a dealer of some sort but resorts to driving around with false plates. If that's how he acts heaven help anyone who buys from him.

The funny thing is nowhere does he say he's a dealer.

Yeah i noticed that as well. Maybe he just happened to find an uncomplied car sitting outside his house and claimed it. Tui ?

When selling a car privately, my experience living in a small town is avoid trade me. If the vehicle can stand a close inspection it will sell on the side of the road.

Works in big towns too. Bit different if you are trying to shift something a bid unusual as then you need the bigger market exposure.

Such a massive influx of vehicles in the last couple of years has sped up the decline in values. Last year I was selling 2005 Tiidas with 100k for $5000. Had to let one go this morning for $4000. If you are trying to sell a car and there are 500 other similar ones on Trademe, it is no use being the 400th cheapest. You are just not going to get a call, no matter how nice the condition might be.

Quite frankly even that isn't that cheap.
It is a sub $20000 car when new that is knocking on 10 years old. That 70000 kms could quite well be Japanese city driving and the car could be quite worn out.

the one you let go for $4000 was that cash or finance? You also mentioned the other day of a $500 toyota corolla trade in you got for a great deal so guess its swings and roundabouts aye?

Two years difference -the silver one is PLUS ORC and is silver--always cheaper

In my opinion, that's far too much money for a 7 hear old cheapest of the cheap smallest of the small car. You could get a Fiat Panda with less km that is only a year or two old, NZ new with factory warranty for very little more, and you would have so much more car for your money it wouldn't be funny. Better features, space, handling, safety, power, economy, build quality. the list goes on. Go and drive one and compare.
On road "costs" haven't been listed so could be anything. My GUESS would be between $300 and $700 Mind you -Other than the chronological age thing the two vehicles are identical mechanically. Given the number plate on the red Passo is from the sellers other vehicle I would say its a fresh import and the seller is a dealer of some sort. Frankly I personally wouldn't touch a 1000cc Passo. IMO they are a gutless wonder and in the real world LESS economical than the 1300cc version. --by real world I mean not poddling along at 50km/h

Both 990cc couldn't drag a skin off a rice pudding

Most private sellers are dreamers and when they set their price their chain of thought is most probably like this "I bought this 2012 Subaru Outback for $30k from Winger in 2015 and I've put 50K on it since and so I will sell if for $20k on Trademe as a private sale". Meanwhile, importers are bringing in much HIGHER spec imports with LESS KMs on the odo and selling for under $16k. BUT once in a while you get a private sale where the seller has already bought and just wants to move a nice car quickly, can't be bothered haggling so prices it really well!

I guess 3 months on Trademe and still unsold sorts them out. That said, I know a guy who has had a $3000 car on Trademe for more than a year and still won't drop his price.

Different category, but some of the guys advertising their yachts on TM have had them there for several years. Why even bother listing them?

Same with some of the motorhomes.

Economics 100. Supply and demand. No barrier to entry for dealers. Virtually unlimited supply. Finite demand. Import prices must eventually fall to a point where the number of dealers will decline to a point where the total market gross margin available makes it viable to be in the industry. The market has no mercy.

Also lots of scope for unscrupulous practices in an effort to cut overheads in the scramble to be the cheapest.Sooo many dodgy dealers out there at the moment, some registered some not. Time for a big cleanup but our commerce commission seems to do very little.
