any recommendations?

nice_lady, Aug 6, 12:18am
Yeah - save your money by not exceeding the speed limit ? Oh and be safer on the road at the same time ! Win, win.

appleman71, Aug 6, 12:23am
oh like the police car caught at 195 on waikato expressway?

loud_37, Aug 6, 12:26am
I know some people who speed that are very safe and some people that are slow that should not be on the road, speed does not equal unsafe driving.

appleman71, Aug 6, 12:27am
totally agree

How many tickets do you have to avoid for a detector to come out even?

bunny2121, Aug 6, 4:45am
Couldn't agree more.

delerium1, Aug 6, 5:17am
Bel, escort, or valentine tend to be the top 3.

saxman99, Aug 6, 5:26am
One.

croco1, Aug 6, 7:01am
I had a Valentine years ago when it was the best on the market, but they are so out of date and not supported in NZ anymore, Escort Redline are apparently the overall best for price and performance.

Uniden do good detectors as well.

supern0va, Aug 6, 9:32am
I cant fault my Valentine One. I was driving to work today in an 80 kph zone and it was going off. ( Never gives false alerts or beeps at every service station like the cheapies ). A Suzuki Swift in front of me was doing around 90kph and I thought, YEP, this will be interesting.

We hit a temporary 50kph due to road works and Mr Swift wasn't slowing. Long story short, Cop car was coming towards us, lights came on, quick you turn and sped after him.

supern0va, Aug 6, 9:33am
2nd hand, latest version Valentine Ones are generally around $500-600 or so. Its not so much the $$$. more the demerit points.

But causes a worse crash as all the other people are incompetent. 'Very safe' does not equate with watching radar - full attention on the road.

mrfxit, Aug 6, 9:18pm
How many tickets can you avoid by not going over the speed limits

mrfxit, Aug 6, 9:19pm
True but it makes a bigger bang the faster you crash

mrfxit, Aug 6, 9:21pm
Thats a few tickets worth saved by not speeding

loud_37, Aug 7, 4:07am
It certainly does and I understand why the police want to keep the speed limit down, but speed is not generally the cause of an accident.

sw20, Aug 7, 4:09am
This is pretty much how I've avoided tickets for the last 10 years. Essentially I set the cruise control at 103km/h on the GPS, I'm still passing most cars on the road. Pick your places to pass, do it quickly and get back to your cruising speed, there is no need to travel at more than 110km/h on the open road.

m16d, Aug 7, 6:02am
All these anti speed posters are probably the ones that cruise along at 85 with a huge queue behind them.

cliffmate, Aug 7, 7:43am
Beltronics are good. Used a XR70 for many years, works ok. was keen on a GT-7 but can’t buy them anymore. Escort are pretty good too, but never owned one. Modern ones are Bluetooth with traffic updates and cameras etc, also with GPS. Good ones will set you back $600-1000.

hoadyas1, Aug 7, 9:21pm
you dont need to watch them they beep

nightsky1, Aug 7, 10:10pm
Yeah : Don't wind your window down while wearing you super fast hero cape.

and remember not to superglue your detector to your forehead, that's not cool any more.
