Is it just me

or are you also finding it difficult to identify synthetic, semi synthetic and plain old mineral oil from reading off the container. Some state "synthetic technology" and its semi or no mention at all what it is.

The price is usually a starting point but it would be good if it was clearly stated on the container.

Well you wouldnt want to be doing a fullnoil change on a Bugatti Veyron it costs $21000 Us & 16 bungs & panels to remove .Plus a special jack to lift it to get it on hoist . --just a useless bit of info

Try using the oil finder guide for your favorite oil brand. It's good practice as it takes in to account all factors rather than just viscosity. They usually recommend full synthetic as the first option and have a description as well.

I think you will find that at Super Cheap and Repco (for example) the oil is arranged on the shelves (by elves) in order ranging from mineral- semi synthetic -full synthetic. Super cheap also have a touch screen that evaluates what oil is recommended/suitable for cars.I don't have any issue with oil container info.

When you see a label that says semi synthetic, you'd expect it to be half synthetic. yes/no. ?
Castrol label theirs as "part synthetic". but when Repco put it in their catalogue, it becomes semi synthetic again.

You should be able to see, smell, and taste the difference

mrfxit, Aug 4, 2:30am
LOL buddy, didn't your missus tell you to stop putting oil on your porridge

morrisman1, Aug 4, 5:03am
full synthetic also doesnt mean that it is a genuine fully synthetic oil. Normally 100% PAO Ester means its a proper fully synthetic oil, but then at the same time these are generally racing oils and not designed for long service.

Just go for a reputable brand with the right spec and viscosity for your engine and change it at the recommended interval or one year. Unless its an extreme situation like constant towing, racing, specialty engine then no need to go away from what is recommended. What car do you have?

stevo2, Aug 4, 5:42am
Thats why I never do the service on my Veyron myself. I always send it into "Oil Changers" for their $79.95 special full service.

did you see how a veyron is serviced somone posted a link to a vid in one of my threads i think

"Part" and "Semi" both mean a mix. Neither say it's a 50/50 mix. 60/40? 30/70?

If I go and buy "Apple / Orange" juice at the supermarket, it's not a 50/50 mix, but it's got some apple, and some orange in it.

Look at the oil ratings etc, and that tells you if it's up to the standard that your car needs. Exactly what they put in the blend to get that rating isn't so important.

budgel, Aug 4, 10:20am
I've stopped using that in my car as the engine got a bit noisy. Smelled OK though!

ambo11, Nov 5, 11:40am
Yeah I find it hard to tell as well. and a synthetic blend means it usually has a "touch" of synthetic in it. that's why I now do my oil changes like this guy does
