Desalt or salt away

davidmoore, Aug 4, 7:11am
this stuff any good ? or just flushing with fresh water ,

thejazzpianoma, Aug 4, 7:13am
Actually, dishwashing liquid is pretty good too. That would be my preference over just fresh water and is what I use in practice as salt away is pretty expensive.

snoopy221, Aug 4, 8:14am
Yeah/Nah never ever use dish wash

Use a good CHEAP Non-Foaming detergent
I.E. Caltex has calpol Shell has tepol

Was told the other day that if ya put ear muffs on and plug cold water on from a tap, the thermostat stays shut and the motor doesn't flush properly.

I don't know the pros & cons of this, but it was told to a mate of mine by a boat mechanic, explaining why his heads were stuffed. And this guy goes overboard at cleaning his boat. Even lost a sale coz the guy said to me while watching the painful procedure after a test run. "I can't buy that boat - my boys and I will never do all that."

What? !
That makes no sense at all.

Ha. you been sucking on the moonshine again.

rambler_man, Aug 5, 2:43am
You will see water coming out in different places as the engine heats up and thermostats open up

lookoutas, Aug 5, 5:08am
You should go and tell a marine mechanic in Tauranga that he's full of it.
Was only just talking to my mate this morning, so I questioned him about it.
He said the guy told him the motors aren't doing enough revs and don't get loaded enough, therefore they don't get up to a decent operating temperature.
He said the best option is to have a tank filled with water that can be fitted under the leg.

Can sometimes see a moon - but it ain't shining.

snoopy221, Aug 5, 5:19am
Well end of the day i STILL stand by my post.
As to ! marine mechanics!
Tell tale temperature tells ya when the thermostat has opened and they DO open on muffs.
And as to why the heads are naffed is NOT once a year flushing the motor in a drum .
WITH A NON FOAMING DETERGENT.
To remove the salt crystals that flushing with just water NEVER removes.

[And if ya mate asks to see his **naffed** heads he WILL see the salt crystals and KNOW a ! marine mechanic! in Tauranga is full of it.]

Actually snoop - I don't give a. toss, about an outboard.
What I can comprehend is his theory that an engine is best flushed when operating under normal loaded running conditions.

I did mention in post 5 that this mate has always muff flushed and cleaned his boats after every use, for the past 50 years that I have known him.

We still laugh over the sale he missed out on, by being 'anally' fussy.

He has seen the heads, and he said they were badly corroded away inside.

m16d, Aug 5, 9:12pm
Well if the motor is 50 years old, I'm not surprised it's corroded.

mrcat1, Aug 5, 9:40pm
I use salt away, but I let the engine idle for 10-15 minutes on fresh water then run the salt away thru it for another 10-15 minutes and then shut it down.
Its a big engine and it heats up well with just idling and as others said that water does come out of other places once its got some heat into it.
And I usually give the rest of the boat a spray with the mixture thru the applicator and it takes all the salt of the rest of the boat.
I'll be taking it in soon for the leg & heads off and new pump, gearbox seals etc before summer so will be interesting to see how clean it is inside.

lookoutas, Aug 9, 8:25am
I know your motors more than 50 years old.
But it's been well flushed.

m16d, Oct 31, 3:53am
Ha. no corrosion here bro. isn't it time you gave up fixing them WRX rally cars and shifted to the beach.
