Only clever dicks in here.Key remotes

a.woodrow, Sep 5, 5:19am
Ok so I've got an interesting one. Down in Invercargill this week we have had a heap of cars that smart keys/remotes have stopped working on. The dealership I work at has probably spoken to 40-50 people with various brand cars over the last two days (normal would be a couple only), and I have heard that other dealers are having similar issues. Batteries in keys are fine, they eventually start working again after a few goes. Absolute mystery

So what gives? My thoughts are solar flare, bootleg radio station, or alien invasion, who has a better idea?

Quite possibly some half clued up car thief has built a unit to sniff them.

Would pay to get all dealerships to check client databases and see if there is a common link with map references

Someone's illegally transmitting continuously on about 433Mhz - get the radio inspectors in - possibly someone who's imported a cheap wireless remote surveillance camera or something similar.

That is what I would suspect. An illegal imported unit transmitting and upsetting the remotes.

So what gives? My thoughts are solar flare, bootleg radio station, or alien invasion, who has a better idea?" Go to the pub and ask for suggestions. Get the boss to throw in a bit of $ to help with the creativity of the patrons plus a day for you to recover before he gets a report.

Errr since we're talking Invergiggle here I'm not sure how you'd tell the difference between the invading Zombies and the locals ?

I would guess stray transmissions of the appropriate frequency. Saw this at a Christchurch mall in the early 2000's. The sensors on the auto opening doors were upsetting imobilisers and keyless entry systems (which were not common then). This of course occurred over a area of a mall car park, if this current issue covers a city, the rouge transmission must be quite powerful.

My guess is that telescum et al have installed another mast or series of masts and have decided as they have in the past to use frequencies without checking what might happen.-Remember the issue with those MG cabriolets?

Was this over last weekend?
My remote played up on Sunday while in town - parked near Haye's/ VW dealer.
Couldn't get it to lock.
All right when I got home.
First time this has ever happened and I know the battery is good because I only replaced it about a months ago

There is a theory that the cars in the Disney 'Cars' universe are descendants of self-driving cars that have become intelligent (think Skynet), and then killed all the humans.

Not so amusing now is it?

Yep that was it. Contacted the license holder yesterday after finding him on facebook having a laugh about it, glad he has decided to switch it off, I suspect due to police involvement. Not really a good look for local amateur radio club though, wonder if they will pay for costs incurred by all the inconvenienced people?
