Navigation System Memory Card Update

woody1946, Jul 11, 11:02pm
Where would you take a memory card to have it updated, or do you have to buy a new card ?

You don't have to buy a new memory card. It's just a storage device like any usb stick or camera/phone memory card. It gets updated generally through plugging the device into your computer then going through the provided software to do the update.

What type device is it - exactly ?
Make/model ?

So to clarify. Does it have its own navigation system? Or are you using the navigation app on your phone linked with the car?

Due to local knowledge there are roads I know that are now closed (i.e Manawatu Gorge) and road changes (i.e Kapiti Expressway) but we want to travel the South Island and would like to get the latest update because we are not familiar with those roads and any recent changes

Its inbuilt with the vehicle, which is only 9 months old

Then why don't you go to the dealer and get them to update it?

That or use Apple car play or android auto and use their apps mirrored onto your screen. They are generally better than the in built systems anyway.

Or use your smart phone and google maps. if you are going to be in a place that loses cell signal that's not too much of an issue you can pre-download maps of considerably large areas and use those so long as you have GPS sat's above you it's all good.

Sorry, not sure how to do that. I'm in my mid 70s and not very tech savvy' but thanks for the suggestion to go back to the dealer. Only trouble is ,they charge for that

I don't have a smart phone, I know,! I know! , its a bugger being elderly in this modern world

They should do it as a normal part of a service. Though the updates are not a constant thing anyway. We get updates on our car for 3 years free.

I don't use a smart phone either, as a phone, though I do own one. Take the sim card out and just use the WiFi, so it costs nothing to run. The Sim card only goes back in once in a blue moon or for an emergency and even then, data is switched off.

It's not so much being elderly that is the problem nowadays, it is that some outfits seem to assume that EVERYONE is glued to a mobile phone and is happy paying out monthly.

Built in car Sat Nav's are generally a bit of a con, as it is far cheaper to use a separate device, if only on the grounds that dealers will always charge an arm and a leg to update theirs. Lest be hones, with modern cars being so reliable these days, they have to screw the money out of the customers somehow, so Sat Nav updates and remotes that cost hundreds of dollars, are there because they don't need to service the car every 3,000 miles.

Although most people will now will use Google Maps on their phones, a TomTom or Garmin is just as useful and some have life time or free updates anyway.

They are especially useful when overseas and without any high data charges to worry about.
