Hate to burst the bubble but it looks like a hydro turbine to me?

nah, I'm talking the lathe, not the crap in it.

I bet they had trouble with tool chatter I think a grinder attachment would be better
anyway . the tyre retreading clip was better

Didn't sound like any chatter problems. Thats a pretty substantial rig built there

Yes I agree with you, I couldn't hear any signs of chattering. I'm presuming the turbine housing was cast iron.

we had vertical lathes who could machine that i recall in my apperentice

its only ali, bloody hard to get chatter with soft material, its more likely to dig in & gouge, but with a sharp knife tool, especially with a large radius that shouldn't happen either

I picked it as being cast iron?

\ dont think so, but either way still wouldn't chatter, cast iron is great to machine

Having cut my 'turning teeth' some 40 years ago on both cast iron and gunmetal I'd have to cast iron can have its moments.

same here but apart from hard spots & inclusions you've got to be trying really hard to stuff up cast iron. I used to machine flywheels & brake discs for most of the shops around Newmarket including Continental cars, Schofields, Stuart Clarke etc, then went onto machining housings for fire service, forestry, hydro projects & even tyre retreading moulds. easy work IMO

Hold on guys, your watching a clip where it finally cut metal, you ain't seeing a possible rehash of tips and bars, just because you cannot hear chatter doesn't mean there isn't a rat shit surface cut . if it is cast iron, the fools obviously don't give a f^&k about their m/cry

I would suspect that the guy who set this all up, Is pretty well experienced in all matters regarding lathe work & innovation. Well worth paying him top dollar wages if he's doing stuff like this on a regular basis.
The current lever of cut is very very gradual, the cut sound didn't change between each rotation in the video so presume a hair trigger grade of creep on the tool. Slow snails pace for sure & yes there probably would have been a bit of experimenting with tool tips etc but if he had screwed it up at all, it probably would have been fatal.

Was that in the early 80's? (I would have been working for APPCO Brake & Clutch at the time).
