Zerk fittings were patented to Oscar U. Zerk in January 1929. In fact, Alemite Manufacturing Corporation was the assignee in this instance. This is why Zerk fittings are also known as Alemite fittings.
Before the existence of Zerk fittings, bearings were lubricated in different ways. Most of these methods were maintenance-intensive and ineffective.
Most machinery bearings in the 19th and 20th century had a cross-drilled hole to receive grease and other lubricants.
