If I was in an accident or having a heart attack they can go as fast as they can. Really guys who cares about the speed limit if you are the one who needs them.

The only time I have (mentally) questioned a police cars speed, it turned out to be a house fire where somebody was trapped & the Officer was the closest car & first to get there.
I don't question their speed anymore.

As well as speed limits the Land Transport Act has

"7 Drivers not to be reckless or dangerous
(1)
A person may not drive a motor vehicle, or cause a motor vehicle to be driven, recklessly.
(2)
A person may not drive a motor vehicle, or cause a motor vehicle to be driven, at a speed or in a manner which, having regard to all the circumstances, is or might be dangerous to the public or to a person."

The limits set by various services could be to keep under the point where Police could issue a dangerous driving charge (50 over limit? ).

Number was there. Land Transport Act 1998 section 7

The Police page listing speeding fines also has this
"At more than 40 km/h above the speed limit you could also get a 28-day licence suspension.

At more than 50 km/h over the limit you could be charged with careless, dangerous or reckless driving. " I don't know who set those numbers.

5.1 Drivers must not exceed speed limits

(1)

A driver must not drive a vehicle at a speed exceeding the applicable speed limit (being a permanent, variable, holiday, urban, rural, temporary, or other speed limit).

(2)

The fact that a vehicle is driven at a speed that does not exceed the applicable speed limit does not excuse an alleged breach of a provision of any other Part of this rule.

(3)

A driver who drives at a speed exceeding the applicable speed limit is not in breach of subclause (1) if the driver proves that, at the time the vehicle was being driven,—
(a)

the vehicle was being used by an enforcement officer engaged on urgent duty and compliance with the speed limit would be likely to prevent the execution of the officer’s duty; or
(b)

the vehicle was an emergency vehicle being used in an emergency and was operating a red beacon or a siren, or both; or
(c)

the vehicle was being used (on a road subject to a speed limit of 60 km per hour or more) to convey a member of the Executive Council engaged on urgent public business, or to convey any other person authorised for the purpose by the Minister and engaged on urgent public business in the execution of the person’s functions.

5.1 (3) indicates there is no defined speed limit for emergency services vehicles. The test paper above is from the FENZ ERD course and reflects FENZ policy not actual law.

That is set by the Government minister after advice from NZTA .
It makes no exemption for emergency vehicles to exceed the speed limits .
Perhaps the Police just turn a blind eye if the speeding was safe .
