How difficult is tri colour to apply

cattleshed, Jul 2, 1:03am
There is the base coat, pearl and then clear coat. Can a touch up area be done with some success using spray cans? Who has experience with this? Not a complete novice and have done a reasonable amount but not tricolour. Do you wait until the base coat is dry or merge the pearl before the base coat sets as in within 5 minutes of applying the last base coat layer? Cheers

3 layer pearl huh, problem is getting it to match. Base colour will be fine but how many of the pearl do you apply? each coat changes it slightly. Test cards are the only way to go or do a blend. Even the clear will change the colour a bit. And yes you wait the correct time between coats but that will depend on the day the heat where you are doing it and so on.
And if you get one speck of shit between base and pearl well its there forever unless you respray again.

Get three sheets of newspaper on top of each other.

Then grab a piece in the middle and rip a small section out of all three.

Then try to patch the hole with three bits from another paper.

You’ll never get the edges to fit together exactly, there’s always going to be an overlap ie there will be an edge that will be five or six layers thick.

That’s about the best analogy I can think of.

Slightly related - had a classic today regarding 3 layer pearl.
Insurance assessor (ass) said he didn't believe a car was 3 layer, so wasn't going to pay the extra cost.
First thing - it was obvious even from the photos that it was 3 layer.
The painter said it was 3 layer.
The photo'd paint code said it was 3 layer, but he had Googled the model car and Google didn't say it was 3 layer!

Thanks yes I can see that correct timing between base and mid coat but is the pearl to basically dissolve itself into the base coat ie become part of the basecoat and so be applied before the base coat is set similar to the clear coat?

Sorry something messed up there. Try again:

I know what you mean, though it is the colour match as such not so much the layered height which can be done in a way that avoids this.

Most paints will melt into each other (for want of a better term) as they are applied with a solvent in them. If you apply it to heavily (wet) it will melt in for sure and most likely give an uneven finish and look motley.
Can you get the pearl in a spray can? spose you can, they put other colours in them.
What colour is it, if its white, well, good luck.

Thanks for your help! Colour is 28y. Basecoat is a white.

Yes pearl is available in a spray can.

My guess is that it is difficult whether using a gun or a can.

Ive never sprayed anything with a can, well as far as car panels go that is but I doubt how good it will be. what panel are you trying to touch up? White is a nightmare as any bit of crap between layers will be seen. Mind you that goes for white full stop really. Nothing worse than a black spec showing up on ya first clear coat.
Trouble is most cars have many variants on just one code. Having the code helps but its the 20 variants (no, no joke) of that code which is the problem.
How he can filler works that out is beyond me unless they spectro it.

Yes anything can be put into a spraycan, we have obliged many times over the years to our retail customers after explaining what is involved in the actual application of 3 layer pearls. Our first recommendation is that they visit a paint shop but under persuasion have agreed to the cans.
While theoretically possible have yet to see one that isn’t ranging from obvious to bloody obviously awful, you may be the exception as I say it is theoretically possible I am yet to see it.
Recommendation pay a paint shop.

and the answer is . BIG BLENDS. stand back and compare the darkness of the pearl before you apply the clear. and do it with very good lighting so you can see the colour tone properly
