Selling at Turners?

mazdasix, Jan 21, 10:54pm
Has anyone had any experience selling a car through Turners? I've got a car I need to sell fairly quickly (no luck on Trademe yet), and I see Turners will appraise a vehicle and make an offer outright, or sell through auction for potentially a bit more money.
I'm guessing their offers would be well below market value, but I'm interested if anyone has tried it/had any success?

Thanks in advance.

I've never had any trouble selling a car on Trademe. Two weeks usually the longest sale time. Too expensive, poor photos or out of the way location or a mix of all three slow down sales.

Turners would be absolute last resort. I'd rather $1 reserve it on Trademe.

Thanks for that. I'll probably give it another week or two on TM, fingers crossed

^^ exactly this^^. You dont have a car listed at the moment

You will get even less at turners, Trademe is the best but you have to have it priced right, everyone wants a bargain, drop the price and sell, the longer it stays on trademe the worse it will be.

I had a pleasant experience selling my car to Turners. I was expecting them to offer a real low ball price and they did not.
Money was in my account the next working day. I was more than happy.

If your happy to sell your car at well below market value for a quick sale, then Turners is a good option.
If your not in a rush and money is more a priority, then it's a terrible option. Just depends on your personal circumstances.
And yes, please don't kid yourself - they did not give you anywhere near what the car was worth, but the important thing is that your happy, so all good.

Put up your ad and let us give constructive feedback. Plenty here who sell plenty,
Quick guide. Great description, lots of info. Great photos and plenty of them. Video walk around and start up engine. Invite viewing. Research prices asked for similar cars and be competitive.

Do you work for Turners ?

what’s the car and what’s the price? The issue may be as simple as wrong pricing

thepiercedkiwi, Jan 24, 9:20am
No I do not

Ok all. What would you think they paid for a 2008 Suzuki Escudo Limited Edition. Full leather , Reverse camera, Mags, Sunroof . With 160 thousand Km,a on the clock. Brand new Wof?

I've sold a couple at Turners thru the auction process and was happy with the price. Recently had a scruffy ute appraised for them to buy. Was offered less than a 3rd of what I eventually sold it for privately.

Do they list vehicles like a car yard, with car yard prices (but not presentation) and eventually live auction off the stuff that doesn't sell?

I'd be surprised if it was more than 8k. Examples with much lower kms than that are around 12-14k retail. Then again there isnt a lot of them in the market, and the model has a very good reputation.

Utes sell themselves. You may as well go to the casino with your money than take one to Turners.

Turners have effectively split into two--Auction and dealership.
Cars you have them sell go through the auction process. Cars they buy could go either

yes you can sell via turners auction and they charge you a a big fee for that, you set a reserve price.

or you can get cash straight away, but they determine what they will pay for it to resell at a profit. not what the car is worth.

mind you that turners is not a dumping ground for cars with issues, e.g. they normally don't take Singapore imports as they can't check the history of the car.

$5k

Took one car to them for a price.

They have access to detailed trademe stats to do their market appraisal.

This includes average time listings of that make and model have been on trademe, and the price that recent sales went through at (This is why trademe asks you what price you sold at if you withdraw a car classified).

From that they appraise a wholesale value (something like 80% of what cars are selling on trade-me), and for their cashnow service offer something like 80% of that. With consideration given to the average time on trademe in deciding the percentages.

So roughly 64% of the value cars are clearing through trademe. That was for a car with very long average time listing though. Might give better offers for easier to sell makes & models.

They will see your car on trademe and note it is not selling at it's current asking price.

That said, if you just want to sell conveniently and in a hurry it could be a good option.

And finding out what they will offer you is as simple as making an appointment and taking the car in.
