Looking at one done 140k's(st-l 4wd) 100+ of those in last 18months or so(therefore mostly hot running i assume), and another at 100k's (ti 4wd), both ex lease.
I know cvt's were an issue in the past, are they still in later years?
Anything else to be wary of?

you can only buy a musso till 2006 4wd or a korando old shape with om 662 same as my 2 mb140 istana mercedes have fitted

Thanks, Not really wanting anything that old to be honest.
Did have a look at a 92 swb patrol auto, with 350k's, but i had a 94 turbo(120k's) 10 years ago, which had auto issues, so changed it to manual, not sure a non turbo auto would suit me(way too old as well).
Yes thinking of trading away another issue, and taking the loss now while it is still a small one(had quotes -after full disclosure), but do not want to be worse off.
I suppose a cx5 would be good as well, but not keen on mazda.
Forester perhaps?
Looking at up to around $28k

Thought about a new samurai(opps I mean jimmy now day's) but the waiting time puts me off, (had a new one before, back in 95).
Had 3 and 5 door Vitara when they first came out, were good cars.

What you are looking to spend and what you are planning to use it for is the starting point. Musso and Korandos lol only the stupid would still be attempting to use those these days for anything other than a boat launching beach hack.

gpg58, Mar 27, 6:39am
$28k give or take a few $k(probally 35 max)
May become my main driver, and for when i want a run down the beach or river etc, or trips in wet and winter conditions(may still keep the 2020 astra rsv for nice days, longer runs and its sleeper style grin factor).
Going to sell my boat(97 searay 240 sundancer), so heavy towing not a factor, but may get a mini jet boat.

OK I cant think of any reason why you should avoid an XTrail, but make sure one of those kms has had complete servicing.

gpg58, Mar 27, 8:34am
Thank you.
There is an issue with the Ti, its first service was 5000km's late(at 20k), which makes me hesitant, but the rest were on time(for both), plus its in auckland, so viewing it is not really practical(have asked for a walk around video, including running).

Thank you.
I agree a low range is best, and as the other thought was something i could tow behind my bus, a manual gearbox was required, if i am going to use the new purchase for that as well.

So rather wait and pay a lot more for new(think wait is down to 8-12 weeks now though?), so i bought a 2010 jimny with 57k on it today, goes well, and it clears the other issue out of my hands (gone - traded in).
Finding it surprisingly lively, compared to the one i had new, back in 95(twin cam versus single)

I had a look at the Xtrail and some of the reviews on the Xtrail and other Nissan product was poor. The CVT seems to be the weak point but different Nissan dealerships have different thoughts on if it needs to be serviced with some saying it’s a sealed unit and others saying it needs to be serviced every 30K.

That is strange, but i too found someone saying theirs died at 120k's and their friends at 100k, both 2017, but is just online feedback, so who knows if its true, or just bad luck for those 2 out of the thousands, or if mistreated with heavy towing etc.

Trying hard to find a free jimny manual online, for my 2009 built(sold 2010).
Found 3 sites have the same one, 682ish pages, but missing all the diff, transfer stuff etc, in section 7 and on.
Not keen to signup for some sites, and those seem to want credit card detail first as well, which i do not have and would not give out if i did.
But at least i have the early part of it now.

Have a look at a 3.6 Outback from 2010-14. They will be ideal for what you need it for and has a conventional 5 spd auto. The outlander is also good and their CVT seems to be more reliable. For around $28k you should be able to get a nice RAV4 too

Thanks, have got the 2010 jimny now, may look for a large suv a bit later on as well.

Just found a full manual for it(899 pages), was an rar file with a supplied password.
Then had to find correct file in it in data folder(name ends with an e, for english language, tried f and got French first)
at https://cardiagn.com/1998-2009-suzuki-jimny-service-manual-pdf/ then copy and paste link to browser. Seems safe as scanned it before opening, and individual files as well. - https://drive.google.com/open?id=1llCajostkm1ura-5vfFGQnPgjjLAvUmI

ps i use a program called free files viewers to open .rar

New Jimny has a lot going for it (looks, more power), but there one you got would be under half the cost, and as I understand has neutral in the transfer case, so even the auto can be towed as a toad. (new one has an electronic dial and no neutral, so needs some mods I think). Of course the auto in both the old and new ones are kinda lacking to the manual is not a bad pick.

Obviously one of the best vehicles off road, but lacking in other area's. Still will be a great complement for your turbo Holden if you keep that.

Agree.
The 95 got 1-3/8 / 32 extractors for torque, plus Harris megaphone(slots opened a bit), and full roll cage, went anywhere fast (for its time), not sure where this will end up going.
Tyres first on monday. Side steps ordered. Looking at manual hubs currently. diffs and boxes will get a lube next. May look for lockers.
So far it looks like its never been offroad(mint engine bay too), no towbar either (yet).
