Is ignorance bliss?

A young couple I'm aquanted with bought a very tidy 02 corolla a few weeks ago for somewhere around $2500. It had a recnet warrant and drives very well and I think they got a good car for the price, it was a private sale. Someone got into their ear about doing a car jam on it and it was re registered years ago, now they are all worried aboit it and want to get rid of it. I wish they didn't know because it really is a good car, so is ignorance bliss in a case like this?

lakeview3, Feb 22, 7:36am
What was dodgy about it? Maybe the owner took it off the road for a while and then reregistered it?

Or maybe it had personalised plates and then got a new rego when it sold?

Could be a perfectly legitimate reason surely?

saxman99, Feb 22, 7:48am
Offer to buy it from them for $2k.

Why didn't this someone get in their ear before the fact, rather than after it? Bit late to think about Carjam after the deals done.

But yes, as LV says, any number of non sinister reasons as to why a car might be re registered.

curlcrown, Feb 22, 7:54am
I would but if I do they'll want me to find them a car and it's just too much of a pain to be honest, i'm trying to get them to keep it.

curlcrown, Feb 22, 7:55am
That's what I thought, no point weeks after. Its just upset them. Its a good car and they were very happy with it.

lakeview3, Feb 22, 8:05am
well just tell them there’s pros good reason why it has been reregistered and leave it at that. Mine I bought at 3 years old with a brand new number plate because the first owner had a personal plate. Another car of mine (a VW Beetle) if you loook the number plate has an exemption as it’s likely been taken off the road for restoration.

So long as the car hasn’t come up stolen then I am not sure I woild be too concerned.

for that sort of money, run it into the ground. there is more risk of getting a dud if they replace it.

gunna-1, Feb 22, 10:07am
I wouldent worry aslong as its not hot, has no money oweing just use it, its a couple of grand for a reasonable car, if you want something that hasnt been crashed or rebuilt or let go dormant and registered again you are looking at 10 grand, for me anything that has wheels and a motor will do, my old kingswood had been cut in half and stitched back together probably sometime in the 80s when i ripped the carpet out, i didnt fret over it.

Buying a used car that hasn't been deregistered and reregistered in the past can potentially be more hazardous. If by chance it has been then at least you know it would have been recompiled and anything that wasnt up to scratch was rectified. Not all repair work gets carried out to high standards. I would take into account how many years ago the reregistration was and how many owners its had since then, if it's been owned by a few individuals for long periods (I'd define that as 5-6 years plus with the same owner) then it's a pretty good indicator that it's not got any irritating or difficult to solve issues that arent any fun to live with. If its had 14 owners since 2007 then probably it has.

kazbanz, Feb 22, 8:04pm
My suggestion is to find out the reason for deregistration.
Lapsed ,Insurance wright off or stolen/recovered.
Lay it to rest

morrisjvan, Feb 23, 9:15am
Why do anything? Just drive the mother.

secca2, Feb 23, 11:49am
so you failed to inform them to do their due diligence?

nice_lady, Feb 23, 9:30pm
What's worrying them so much ? Specifically.

2sheddies, Feb 23, 10:15pm
What a bloody dopey comment. Why is it his fault for not telling them to do due diligence? The ones who bought the car were responsible for that, nobody else. Why should the OP have to spoon feed them?

bumfacingdown, Feb 23, 10:20pm
Where did it suggest the OP had ANY input into the purchase?

kazbanz, Feb 23, 10:29pm
probably this is a hint.

Just answering your question not suggesting right or wrong.

tygertung, Feb 23, 11:20pm
It is good if it has been re-registered as it has a good thorough inspection if it has been re-registered.

bumfacingdown, Feb 23, 11:48pm
Which could be taken as its to much of a pain so I have not helped them purchase.
Only the OP can say which is right ha ha

at a $2500, pricepoint, one can't be to fussy about semantics. Best they concern themselves about the actual condition rather than semantics.

Could be a trivial reason for the re -reg too. Perhaps somebody didn't like the 3 letter's on there number-plate so decided to get a new one.

The purchace was nothing to do with me, infact I didn't even know they wanted to buy something, they just asked me what I thought after the fact. I suspect that it was written off by an insurance comapny, but it was so many years ago and has had som many warrants since then and the car is in such a price bracket I dont thik it matters at all. It just made me think how much happier they would be if they didn't know about it, it's a good car.

s_nz, Feb 24, 7:53am

Apparently the following are skipped: ARS, ASS, BAD, BAG, BAT, BRA, BUM, BUT, CNT, CUM, CUN, DUM, FAG, FAK, FAT, FCK, FKN, FKQ, FKU, FQM, FQN, FUC, FUK, FUQ, FUZ, HAG, JAP, JEW, KFC, KGB, KKK, KLL, KNT, KUM, LSD, and NAZ

However stuff like FTP, FAP & GAY were still issued, letter combinations some may perfer not to have on their plates.

Apparently after the Christchurch shootings, NZTA offered to replace "GUN" number plates free of charge if the owners wanted.

tgray, Feb 24, 8:08am
If safety was their priority, they wouldn't have bought a 19 year old $2,500 car in the first place. It would have had a zero crash rating safety at best anyway.
What the heck are they worried about?

toenail, Feb 24, 11:35am
Maybe dead body in the trunk and it was towed to the lab for forensics and storage and after they were done car was re- registered.
