Not an easy fix for auto makers. They need to change their whole design and procurement approach or use way less electronics in cars.
Most users of electronics want large numbers at once, and expect future shipments to be quite different. This is what chip foundaries are set up for.
Auto makers want components to be supplied as they use them, and look for a continuous supply over several years. This is the way auto supply chains work.
How are you going to have less electronics in a car to run all the mandatory safety and emissions bs

Given how much all the car manufacturers have been pushing both the product and its manufacture into developing markets, what did they think was going to happen long term. Getting all those Chinese off their bikes and into cars was always going to have that effect.

Serves the buggers right. Tried to save a penny and it's costing them a pound. JIT manufacturing is a great way to keep overheads low when everything is running smoothly, but it's a chimp tantrum session when components don't arrive when needed.

The chip shortage was caused by all the Crypto Kiddies wanting free Lamborghinis without working causing the fabs to divert manufacturing to Crypto mining hardware. Just try and buy a Graphics card at the moment for your gaming computer.
