A quick search on here shows they aren't' amazing. Is that just limited to petrol? or are the diesel ones sh!thouse too? One in particular hubby is eyeing up 2007 diesel done 192000kms from a dealer.

Jeremy Clarkson wasnt at all impressed with them particularly their off road abilities.

Haha, it's not really a 4wd is it? No way i'd take it off road anyway

Yeah i saw that thread hence my above comment, i cans ee they're not highly rated. Just wondered if that opinion was based only on petrols or if the diesels one suck too

The BMW diesel engine in the X5 is common to diesels in the X3, X4 and X6 plus the BMW sedan range. From my understanding they are a very good reliable engine if maintained as per the handbook. i have one in my X3. well pleased with it.

The problem is it is not just the engine! It is basically just about everything else as well! Horrendous costs. Just do some google searches and see.

Having a long history of reliable and cheap to run bmws I’m biased. It’s true it’s best to have a knowledgeable small workshop and ability to search for parts, if you do that parts prices are surprisingly low. But I’d not have an x5 as it was not a good design. Better a 530d wagon.

Brother has had a X5 for last 3 years No problems, Son had a X3 did big kms no problems. The only ones who have problems with BMWs are the owners of other (mainly Japanese) cars.

A relation of mine bought a brand new diesel X5 in 2004. Had it 12 years did nearly 300,000kms and it never once put a foot wrong. No breakdowns. Zero issues whatsoever. Was serviced by dealer whilst in warranty then serviced at normal garage.
The problem with many European vehicles is that they are not tolerant of neglected servicing. And by and large Kiwis are atrocious at maintaining vehicles. They spend zero dollars on preventative maintenance then whinge when something goes wrong. It doesn’t matter if Nana’s Corolla misses a service but don’t do that to a more complex motor vehicle.

We wanted an x5 a few years ago, and test drive a few.
Then we drove a MB ML 350 and never looked at a BMW again.
The merc has been fantastic, it’s now 10 years old and still the nicest car of its sort I’ve ever driven.
