Will used diesels go up in price/hold value now

shorebee, Jun 14, 8:27pm
Ive seen a few threads on rangers and hilux now becoming more expensive new and used, I also had a 2012 e350cdi on my watch-list for 3 weeks at $14,000 and today its back up to $18,000 at the dealership, no owners as yet, I thought they would want to clear it before it comes with a loading or is the loading from next year.

Remember what happened last time Labour thought banning used import diesels over a certain age was a good idea. Theres still old dungheap Surfs, Terranos, Bighorns and the like still on the road and people willing to repair them as a direct result of that policy.

budgel, Jun 14, 9:31pm
I think people are repairing them because they need it. I dont think they are making a political statement.

intrade, Jun 14, 9:37pm
Yea like they can't afford 2000$ for 1 headlight when you can get a corolla low milage fresh import for 5 grand where a headlight is 150 bux if it ever doubtfully needs one = that's 3 headlights and your reliable car is paid for.
its not just here its worldwide no one wants this modern crap that cost a fortune to repair.

"people willing to repair them as a direct result of that policy."
Can you quantify that, you could be right if two people were willing to fix them "people willing to repair them as a direct result of that policy." but I doubt your claim covers is the majority

franc123, Jun 14, 9:47pm
Oh for crying out loud none of that stuff would still be around if more modern reasonably priced replacements were available. When you cut off the supply of newer models the old junk hangs around longer.

gazzat22, Jun 14, 10:08pm
Franc Spot on! .Half the old "heaps" wouldnt be on the roads here if new or newer equivalents were available at a reasonable price plus if people were paid a decent wage they could afford newer vehicles like politicians and others in government or Local Body Employ.

msigg, Jun 15, 1:14am
Yes it will happen. Inflation will climb over the next few years, trouble is wages will be slower to follow. Yes rangers will go up in price.

tweake, Jun 15, 1:45am
absolutely.
so now all the old high polluting vehicles will stay on the road because the supply is now restricted. this also mean they will be worth more.
not only the new tax, but there is 4 month waiting lists for new vehicles.

if you have been looking at a new vehicle, buy it today because it may take 4-6 months to get here and cop the the new tax.

if you want to upgrade the nz fleet to low emission vehicles make them cheap and have a plentiful supply.

wind.turbine, Jun 15, 1:52am
I agree with Franc.
I have been thinking about trading my old 07 3.2L triton on on somthing new like a pajero sport to use as my town car and to tow the boat as I have two utes and they are a pain in town.

In saying that, I am now thinking im better off keeping it, its up to 300'000km doesn't use a drop of oil, runs like a dream, and owes me nothing.

if I was to go sell it for something more modern, am I shooting myself in the foot with reliability and the huge cost of the new vehicle that could ether badly drop value over night with the new taxes coming in, or our unknown future laws that this govt bring in.

Wheres what I have now, if it drops in value, I'm not gonna have a cry about it.

As Franc has said, people will hold on to the old reliable models as long as they can, even if they have to fix the odd part here and there, its better than getting sucked into this unknown fleet of EVs where every part seems to cost so much that they become uneconomic to fix rather quickly.

kazbanz, Jun 15, 7:56am
In essence all fresh imports just went up in price 3k regardless of if new or used. I can now see fleet owners with double cabs weighing up the viability against other more Economical cars even with the fbt advantage

rbd, Jun 15, 8:39am
Pretty simple isn't it?

Increase costs of replacement vehicles and people will keep old ones longer.

This is an opportune time to state that we are one of the few developed countries in the world with no emissions testing. So Labour have made emissions worse by keeping those out of tune old cars (as we maintain cars poorly in NZ) on the road.

pdc1, Jun 15, 7:21pm
Actually labour has made the emissions better. Doesn’t matter how smokey a old car becomes, it is still far better for the environment than the pollution and damage done the planet when a new vehicle is manufactured and when they are eventually scrapped.
Wokesters have no comphrension of what involved to make steel and plastic, and somehow manage to confuse scrapping with the word recycle.

bill1451, Jun 15, 7:51pm
Hey guys can you not see what this govt and no doubt National will do (as it is now LAW and successIve govts cannot change the law without a vote)
iS EITHER put road user/rego charges up so high they become unaffordable
and/or hike the price of fuel to push people into EV,s which if you are are on limited/fixed income you cannot afford an EV anyway and the second hand ones are just that, uneconomical to repair, for people living in a rural situation like myself this is becoming a conumdrum.

3tomany, Jun 15, 8:21pm
Double cab utes will be even more popular than they are now as the resale on them is going to be kept very high for a long time under this new tax.

socram, Jul 26, 4:06am
I traded in our diesel at 3 years instead of 5 or 6 and went back to petrol, as I expected to see penalties applied to diesels making them less attractive at trade in time.

As diesels can be tuned to run on a mix of old cooking oil and turps, I'm pretty sure they'll still be around for a long time, especially for rural use.
