09 FG Falcon. Failed on corrosion in the engine bay. This is surface rust only, I could clean it up with a steelo pad or wet and dry. I thought you could fail if it was within 150mm of a structural point. This rust is 310mm from the suspension bolt, the point he failed it on. And its 170mm from above the front wheel. I just cant see how its a wof problem. am I seeing this wrong?

My guess is he's failed it on section f, which essentially says he can fail anything he doesn't like the look of.
1. The structure of the vehicle (shaded areas of Figure 3-1-2) has visible:
a) deformation from the original shape that has affected the vehicle’s structural integrity (Note 1) (Note 3) (Note 9) (Figure 3-1-4), or
b) cracking, or
c) fracture, or
d) corrosion damage (Note 2) that is individually larger than 50mm in diameter (Figure 3-1-1), or
e) corrosion damage within 150mm of the top of an A-pillar (Figure 3-1-2), or
f) any corrosion that the inspector considers has caused weakening of a load-bearing structure (Note 6), or
g) poor repairs that have not returned the structure to within a safe tolerance of when it was manufactured (Note 3) (Note 6), eg:
i. filler has been used in an attempt to conceal corrosion damage or deformation of a component
ii. a high strength steel component has been heated
iii. a component has been strengthened.

Care to post some photos? Sounds like BS to me if it's just surface scale.

Its a tough call thats for sure. I could sand and paint it within 10min but will I need proof its fixed or is that all I need to do. There is no welding or fill need its just surface rust.

How do I post pics?

do that and go else where for a new wof, simple

Load pics on computer, go to 'my trade me', then' view my trade me' down to 'my photos' 'up load photo' browse, select photo, click on it then open, wait for photo thumbnail to show, double click it to open full size then copy address in address bar and paste here. Think I ive got that right from memory.
Personally l would sand it smooth and just spray Brunox on the rusty bit let them recheck seeing it’s nothing . Then with a wolf finish the painting etc

You know a wolf that is a competent body shop hand?

A wolf will always be a wild animal. Too dangerous for anyone if not an experienced handler.

There is no rust under the plastic at the top of the pic
Yep I can see the issue. Theres clear evidence of water flow from behind the panel in the form of rust staining. Whats behind that panel, is for the owner/ panelbeater to sort out. Why is there water behind there? it's also a sealed joint which will be holding a certain amount of water behind it.
That said, Wof rust always used to be anything within the suspension area & upwards to the body, including at the most forward & rearward points of the suspension. Bottoms of mudguards/ valances/boot lid lips etc were not included. They seem to be trying to include ANY rust in ANY spot now

OK OK smart guys. -I pad miss key.

White and rust--a not so good combination come WOF time. My opinion here-get some decent cutting compound and clean that area up with the cutters. See what it looks like cleaned up. Don't in any way try to repair the area.

Good starting point. Ill do that this weekend.
Thanks for all the input.

Drivers side directly under the wiper plastic aye, Just fixed the same thing last weekend. Might pay to take the plastic off as mine was starting to bubble just beyond where I could see. Easy as fix

Directly under that the body work curves outwards and there is a hole that a wiring loom goes through. Have a look just above the hole there is another seam that may be bleeding as well

Even if your got dodgy looking surface rust, go over the entire car & scrape it off & disguise it before WOF time, saves hassles of none structural rust not passing, if you can be bothered.

Go on then. Then take it for its recheck.

My suggestion --grab an old toothbrush and some jif if you don't have cutting compound that will be small enough to scrub the surface rust off -Im betting that's all it will take

A wash with diluted phosphoric acid would remove the staining.

My opinion still stands that it was not a wof issue but in saying that there was a very little bit pitting starting.
That looks worse than mine was but was it worth a fail? At least you got an early warning for an easy fix. Check out my earlier post and have a look directly under this spot
