I owned an Astra once, ended up at the wreckers. Engine check light was always coming on. Auto sparky couldn't nail down the fault. Brother's mate an experienced auto sparky checked it over thoroughly. His advise, get rid of it quickly. Within a month it dropped number one piston. Will never own another one. Brother served his time at GM dealership, frowned a lot at the mention of it lol.

Do all Astras have a cam belt made of licorice straps or is it just certain years?

intrade, Aug 29, 7:38am
only some years i think. The thing is more and more modern car makers adopt that design strategy.

Christchurch to Nelson return in a four speed auto 1 litre Yaris? Sure if you hate yourself.

Mums friends drove a modern one from Christchurch to Blenheim return and I thought that was bad enough considering they rented it.

You will be fine with the Yaris, It will outlast an asta by many years, they were a plie of crap as suggested, Do your regular servicing and all good to go. Have fun.

I had a 1 litre Vitz many years ago, horrible car to drive, absolutely no power, as you had to drive it so hard to keep up with traffic flow etc , it used so much fuel, I gave up and replaced it with a 1.8 Corolla Fielder, so so much better, plenty of power, and used less fuel than the Vitz. I'll never have a small engined car again. The 1.3 and 1.5 Vitz are ok. All the 1 litre Vitzs should have been banned from being imported in to NZ!

I've got a 99 Vitz 1000 and it's certainly happier in flat conditions in town rather than hilly highway conditions. It's not what it's really made to do, it's an urban commuter and not a substitute for a larger car. I wouldn't call it 'horrible', it has limitations but is otherwise quite a cool car to live with and a faithful wee friend. Its never done worse than 7L/100km and that is purely urban work a lot of it cold.

When you use a car for a purpose its not really made for you get what you deserve. I am surprised no one has come on here and complained their 900cc car can not pull a two ton load.

Yeah well so many idiots expect one vehicle to do absolutely everything. I've got a Vitz for the town, a Fairmont for the country, an Escudo for offroad, and a Falcon ute for loads. Sure they're all getting on in years and yes I can do all work on them myself, but all four of these combined cost much less to buy than one very used crew cab pickup which is compromised in most areas and excels in none.
