What is the cheapest oxy acetylene system?

cattleshed, Nov 6, 6:09am
So there is the swap system eg Corgas via Bunnings. Eg oxygen $240 deposit (refundable) plus $127 and then swap is $89. Then you can purchase your own bottles and of course every 5 years there is the retest. Refills are cheaper. This would not be high use and I am inclined to think that the swap system would be the way to go. Thoughts?

Made that choice 6 months ago, seemed to be the best deal all round, and they are open on weekends, imo an important point, when doing home project's. Supposed to be able to exchange or return bottles anytime, even many years later.
But like the bullshit boc/nzig cheats stealing your bottles in recent times, KEEP YOUR RECEIPT SAFE.
but do read the fine print as I think the bottles are on long-term loan not actually ownership

Thanks. Corgas is one of the swap co's so yes it is def not ownership more of a loan.

I still have ownership papers for bottles from what NZIG used to be called back in the late 1960-early 70's.
I dunno if they still have to recognise it any more.

It is the DX acetylene that BOC (NZIG) recon they own, they started claiming them back in the '80's. I have one DX left, and when it runs out will have to make a trip to Bunnings. Acet is no longer filled in NZ, it all comes from overseas now.

It is much cheaper to use Oxy LPG now if you don't need to fusion weld. LPG works well for heating and brazing.

True. Have not used this combo but know some do. I think different torch / tips are needed? Different reg as well? Any tips (so to speak) would be useful. So basically what do you need for the conversion?

tygertung, Nov 6, 7:18pm
Nothing, it works with the normal kit. I am using an acetylene regulator in the LPG bottle, it screws in fine.

Same torch and tips. the LPG doesn't work with the extra small tips, but I've had no problem on thin metal with the slightly larger tips.

I'm using a comet sprint mainly.

Great, but definitely won't fusion weld though will it? And are you just using a 9kg LPG cylinder?

stornello, Nov 7, 6:29am
I use my gas set for welding, it's handy that it can cut and braze too. I have a 200amp MIG, but some stuff I prefer to gas weld.

tygertung, Nov 7, 7:19am
It will technically fusion weld I believe, but it is a bad idea as you get too much hydrogen in the weld and it is weak. That is the case with steel. I dare say you could fusion weld copper or brass no problem though. I think it would also be a bad idea with aluminium.
It isn't quite as hot as acetylene, but still plenty hot.

Yes just a 9kg bottle. Been using the same one for probably 8 years now, without filling. Lasts for ages.

I bought an ownership oxy bottle from Ezitools as it is way cheaper than renting, and get it filled at Southern Gas Services.

+1, good value for money & great service.

Not ownership papers - they will be lease papers. NZIG never ever sold their bottles - they were all leased for either 25 or 50 years.

Cheapest option is to buy a small O2 bottle and use a regular LPG one. Let the swappers worry about the compliance every 10 years.
