What is a good lightweight DIY jack for the home mechanic. And how much do I need to spend to get one.

ok light waight yes and no. They all are not exactly light it also depends how many tons you need to lift. i have 2 jacks and i need them transportable both are race-jack aluminum style. 2.5 ton and 3.5T capacity ah yea prices 250 to 350 is what i paid for each
The budget low profile models I see around, all have a short lifting arm.

LMFAO, yea sure 1.6T. Got one here on loan, it struggles with my Wingroad, the pump piston sticks so you have to use the lever. It looks to be the same size pump as the 20 year old budget 1T models that we used to get for $50

Not going to find a decent long lasting jack until you go commercial OR, you can find an old dead commercial jack & rebuild it

This is what I recommend you buy. I have had lots of the smaller ones but at the best they're just OK. This is safer and more robust and will last. over a 10 year period it'll only cost you $25.00 a year. These are on special at certain times of the year and can be as low as $189.00.
Supercheap had one the other week, I bought. the 1400kg one for $80. Excellent!

This question can't be answered without you supplying the obviously missing piece of extremely relevant info: Just how much weight will you want to lift. The more weight - the heavier the jack capability and the lighter your wallet will be in consequence.

I have got one of these and it is great. I originally got it for my atenza because it was too low to the ground for my wayco and powerbuilt jacks.

Get a jack with big wheels and good sized lugs on the turntable, because as the jack raises the wheels need to go under the vehicle and if the wheels can’t turn the car falls off the jack

Best deal is from a pack of cards as there's four jacks.

And bear in mind that it doesnt matter what the ton rating is on a jack,, it wont lift it.
