we are needing to buy another car as our transmission is on its way out. We have three teenage boys and need an suv that will accomodate them as well as the dog in the boot. We currently have a ford territory. We are looking at spending no more than $20k tops.

If you’re looking at $20k why not get the transmission replaced or rebuilt? Or is the rest of the car stuffed or not really suitable?

As per #2. Why does the entire vehicle need replacement and has your trans issue been accurately diagnosed and costed? With whatever vehicle you buy you are likely going to lose more in the next 12 mths in depreciation than what a trans repair is likely to cost, especially if its an older one which still uses the 4 speed auto.

I had contemplated doing that. Our mechanic hadnt even suggested that just said the transmission wont last too much longer. Maybe we need to investigate further.

Mechanic doesn't want work/income so suggests that you buy a newer vehicle that requires less maintenance or repair?

Look at the overall condition not just the transmission. If it's an older Territory the rear suspension seems to be a liability.

I would get a second opinion from a gearbox specialist then if the decision is to replace/repair i would look at that but be sure there is a good warranty.Supply and fit would be my option.

IF the Ford is doing the job space wise then pay the 4 k to have a Gearbox shop fix the gearbox--forget normal mechanic take it to a specialist. BUT have the kids actually got the room in the Ford?

Thanks for all your replies. We are going to go back to our mechanic again and ask about replacing. Its a 2011 model territory if that helps. My boys fit three across very comfortably.
If the mechanic says to replace we will take to a transmission specialist also.
