Hi folks, I am wanting to powder coat my ute deck in hammertone finish. Just wondering if anyone here knows of a company that has a good reputation, I have heard of a couple of outfits that have had troubles with the coating peeling off in sheets if water gets underneath the the finish. Cheers

I have never been convinced that powder coating is durable, as I have seen it flake off things when water gets under it. At least with paint it is adhered to the surface, so if it gets a chip, it is only in that one area.

Powdercoating is a porous decorative coat and requires preparation prior to coating for exterior use. Steel requires sandblast and a zinc coat or Galv prior to powdercoating, Aluminum requires an etch pretreatment. Prepared and coated correctly it will not come off, aluminum windows are an example.

Because its a flat deck landcruiser with 3mm fold up sides. Plastic no thanks

On 3mm steel there will be flex and the pobder coat may delaminate . Anybody else in the world powder coat deck ? Cheek that out ,I do not think it is suitable .

What sort of paint do they use on ships? That would be pretty tough stuff.

But it can oxidise into a white powder. aluminium windows are an example!

Had my car's spaceframe chassis powder coated in 1994. Wasn't impressed with the initial finish and demanded it be redone.
They had to sandblast it off. Second time, excellent.
Still as good as new over 25 years later.
See #3. Like all coatings, it is only as good as the prep. I had considered having it galvanised, but glad I didn't, as I think the chassis would have just about doubled in weight as molten zinc would probably have filled too many cavities.

forget powder coating a flat deck. the usage and flex will stuff it up. thats also why paint doesn't last long. there is a good reason most of them are galv.
