Footpath riding new rules

kansai-s, Jul 27, 3:55am
If the new rules are passed by govt. who is going to police them? They can;t police all the rules they have now.

intrade, Jul 27, 4:37am
parking warden thugs?

budgel, Jul 27, 5:03am
Like most things, problem areas will be dealt with.

who by.?

But only after some poor pedestrian gets seriously injured, or killed, by an irresponsible cyclist.

kazbanz, Jul 27, 6:39am
hu ? So a kid on a bike ?

tamarillo, Jul 27, 8:03am
rules aren’t designed for 24 hours surveillance monitoring. Or do you support such a thing?

bill1451, Jul 27, 8:22am
Ahh more likely some twat on an E scooter, that you cant hear, Bikes have bells.

sr2, Jul 27, 8:27am
LOL, edited to say.
"more likely some twat wearing headphones on an E scooter. "

dublo, Jul 27, 8:40am
I agree with all the entries after my first one, it certainly seems that anything on wheels represents a danger to pedestrians. The two just don't mix on a pathway.

marte, Jul 27, 9:04am
They just confusing the issues now.

Footpaths = for those with feet only.
Cycle paths = on cycles only
Roads, wheeled registered vehicles only
Bodys of water = boats, barges.
Train tracks = trains
Air = Airplanes

Maybe footpaths if it's a occupation.
Too many cyclists using the footpath when there's a cycleway that's not getting used, but takes up 1/3rd of the lane & they can use it for free ( unlike cars & such that pay rego to be there)

Mobility scooters?

kazbanz, Jul 27, 5:33pm
or after some poor cyclist gets seriously injured, or killed, by an irresponsible pedestrian,
I honestly do not understand the idiots walking along shared paths with blaring headphones on totally oblivious to the world- or yakking away on their cellphones. Not an issue if they are staying "within their lane" -big issue if they are wandering all over the whole path. I even have the same thing happen when out running. --to be clear -im not talking footpath here im talking driveway wide (or more ) shared paths.
My attitude re e scooters is simple--if its got any form of motor/engine then it should be for road use only

richardmayes, Jul 27, 6:39pm
At least the e scooter riders in downtown Wellington seem to appreciate that, as the speedy ones with a motor and brakes, the onus is on them not to bowl people over and injure them.

Meanwhile here in Featherston we have a miserable old B-starred who hates everybody and yells abuse at mothers with prams, and children, and anybody else who doesn't get out of his way fast enough as he hoons along on his mobility scooter. Hopefully he will be past it soon, before he hurts someone (Or vice versa.)

amasser, Jul 27, 7:56pm
There will be no policing - councils don't care and Police look the other way when cyclists (often adults, without helmets) ride on footpaths now. It's a stupid idea as there are enough problems with misuse of footpaths already.

Make a submission to the Minister of Transport, or whoever. Perhaps the Minister of Health should have some input by encouraging people to exercise.

kazbanz, Jul 27, 10:55pm
ACTUALLY mate-- My mental image of an "average" footpath and yours were likely miles apart. I was thinking about wide footpaths you could literally drive a truck down not the 1.0m wide footpath. I can well imagine a 16 year old kid barrelling along there and wiping out a little old lady.
In my local area the council greenies want to narrow a couple of busy roads for bicycle riders.--TOTALLY ignoring the wishes of the local community (including recreational cyclists) The community wanted a connecting underpass so we are totally isolated from cars.

Funny how motorists crossing the footpath in to Mc Donalds or KFC etc think they have the right of way and pedestrians need to jump out of their way.
I do cos I dont want to be dead yet.

dead right

dublo, Jul 28, 5:41am
Yes, pedestrians have right of way, vehicles crossing the footpath are required to give way but, as we told our boys when out walking with them when they were young, be observant at every crossing and stop clear if there is any chance the driver doesn't see you.

LOL, very good point!
Can't stand Macas - give me an old-school burger any day but I can understand running over the odd pedestrian in the rush to purchase a double down!
