My son has just bought a new car. Well, two years old and less than 20km. Insurance company asked about the alarm and immobiliser system when he went to change the insurance over from his old vehicle (same company). He told them it was a factory fitted alarm and immobiliser system and quoted what the handbook said: “Security: DataDotDNA® Every Subaru is fitted with advanced engine immobilisers and the DataDotDNA®3 Theft Deterrent System. Microscopic dots are laser- etched with each vehicle’s unique Vehicle Identification Number – making it a less attractive target for thieves.” They said, unless it is fitted with one of our approved systems we cannot insure you, you will need to remove that system and fit an approved immobiliser. He then contacted Subaru NZ who said “it is not possible to remove and replace the security system and any attempt to do that would not only completely disable the use of the vehicle it would also void the warranty, we therefore would question the insurance company‘s motives for requesting that. He has relayed that to the insurance company but they have gone strangely quiet.
So, he is going to change Insurance companies, but wondering if anyone has ever encountered something like this? Cheers.

No, my insurance company asked what was fitted to my Nissan and I said a factory immobiliser and alarm system. It has some fairly decent options from new for a 2005 vehicle. Their reply was "great. you get a discount." Then they said, "factory systems are deemed high quality".

Yes, my thoughts as well. Considering this is a 2018 vehicle also fitted with the Subaru Eyesight safety system I find their response baffling. Apparently the security system is also linked to all the windows/glass etc, so presumably all that would need replacing. It all just smacks of some untrained employee not being up with the play.

You do know what DataDots actually are don't you? They're a theft deterrent but are not an alarm or immobilizer. If anything they should be giving a further discount for a DataDot treated vehicle. They can't be completely removed. its the whole point of them!

I confess, I only know what I have read in the manual. But the vehicle has the full keyless security/alarm system. The dataDot thing was quoted to the insurance company assuming they would know what it is. Apparently not.

The insurance company representative obviously was an idiot. Ring them again and talk to someone else and clearly state that it has the FACTORY fitted security.

They obviously don't want to insure Subarus. Go someplace else.

This, it’s not an alarm system merely a deterrent because it can be found better. Insurer rep maybe simply didn’t understand and explain correctly. Maybe they are asking you to fit an alarm for best cover?

now to not try and make a offensive comment. i have only experienced that in the last 30 years here lol. Personal opinio proofen by not me Now. Now to the best insurance from research as i have non as i dont waste no money on insurance unless i am forced to. F.M.G its endorecd by panel beating repair shops that this unsurer pays for the full repairs and not tells repairer you got to do it cheaper cause we only pay this much. I was told this by people on here.

It has an alarm (with siren) and an immobiliser factory fitted as standard.

Mate--cutting through all the BS and bluff. Your son need to PROVE that the factory alarm system meets or exceeds the four star rating required by insurance companies for Subaru vehicles. OR he need to have a four star (or greater) alarm fitted. -a lot of them will operate using the factory car key remote buttons.

So . All he needs is a Subaru franchise letter head stating what the comparative rating would be for his specific cars system, to alternative & comparable aftermarket security systems,

Have gone to another insurance company. They didn’t even ask about the alarm system, but got a 10% discount because it has the Subaru Eyesight Safety system. Plus the car is housed inside the Military base during night as well. Seems the bigger Insurance companies have more up to date knowledge of the newer vehicles. Was marginally cheaper per year too. Job done.

some insurance companies simply do not want to know about Subaru's. good to see he went to a better insurance co,

Maybe but the car insured with them was a Subaru as well so technically it was just a transfer of the policy to a newer vehicle and increase the cover. Craziness as they lost business over BS!

Would it have been Tower?

Insurance company must still think it's 1999 and treat every Subaru the same still.
AMI wouldn't insure my BC5 RS Legacy back in 2013 without me fitting at least a four star approved alarm system.
