There are increasing numbers of hybrid vehicles on the second hand market, for example the Toyota Aqua. With say a 2012 model with 120,000 on the clock, what is a realistic expectation for battery life at that point? How much do replacement batteries cost, and are they readily available? Could a potential buyer realistically expect the dealer toprovide this information?

For the Aqua ,the Prius and the Fielder non PHEV hybrids it will cost about $2200 for the battery pack. Its about $1400 labour cost. so total $3600.00 The total amount is correct I may have the labour/part cost numbers outa whack. I would have a realistic expectation of 200000k-400k from a hybrid battery but I've heard in the interweb thing of extreme cases both ends of the scale.

I would expect 20 years / 400,000 out of the toyota / Lexus NiMH traction packs in NZ climate. (be careful with ex Singapore.)
My Hybrid (RX400h) is a 2006 with 206,000km with no battery related issues to my knowledge.
Replacement cost is $3k + Fitting for a brand new aftermarket pack with a 24mo warrenty, or $1k + fitting for a Manufactured pack with a 1y warranty.
Apparently fitting in the Prius / Aqua is pritty, it is just under the boot floor. In my car it is under the back seat so the interior needs to be stripped.
Don't trust the dealer to provide any information. They have a big conflict of interest.
If you are in Auckland and want a pre-purchase battery inspection done, these people can do it:

Thanks to the taxi / ridership app industry, toyota hybrids have an active support aftermarket in Auckland at least. Taxi duty is very harsh compared to what private owners would expose a car to, so the industry largely exists to support them.

I've been wary of them for years but having owned several this year I'm no longer scared of them. I would feel uncomfortable about making any claims to a buyer about how much longer a battery should last on a used hybrid, there are may variables. A dealer could expose themselves to litigation by making claims about it's life expectancy if it falls short.
