Wof with space saver

whynot47, Sep 5, 1:22am
Hi guys ,
Can I get a wof with a as new space saver wheel and tyre?. If not then how is it legal to even drive with one fitted? Thanks

Only a temp fitment to go to a place to get the punture of the original tyre fixed

apollo11, Sep 5, 1:28am
Nope. Temporary/emergency use only. Only allowed to drive up to 80km/h on them. What's wrong with the original tyre/wheel?

Thanks guys. I hate these things. better than nothing but not as good as a same real wheel and full sized tyre.
They call them space saver so as to have us believe its for our benefit but I suspect it saves the manufacturer millions not having to supply 5 real road wheels and 5 full sized tyres.

Lot less space and weight taken up by a spacesaver than a full size rim and tyre .

Its a reason for WOF rejection. See 8a here:

https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/general/tyres,-wheels-and-hubs/tyres-and-wheels

Can't comment on the legality of their use.

Note that in addition to the 80km/h limit, the lifespan of space saver tires is typically between 80km and 500km, rather than the 10's of thousands of km's of normal tires.

In short, you need to have the damaged tire fixed or replaced.

The big ol stickers stuck to every space saver wheel answers that question.
Nowadays with ESC cars aren't even coming with space savers.

It’s legal in the sense that although it’s not up to WoF standard, you are allowed to drive a vehicle without a WoF provided you are doing so solely for the purpose of bringing the vehicle into compliance; ie directly to a tyre shop for example.

My SIL when he lived in the UK had several cars with no spare just an Aerosol Can which wasnt much use when the tyre hit something that caused it to disintegrate. It amuses me that they get called a"Space" Saver when there is in most cases enough Space for a full size wheel and Tyre."limp"home or money saver for the Manufacturers would be more apt.

ESC has nothing to do with lack of a spare wheel, that was all driven by cost, space and weight reduction. The

I don't think the OP is taking a car for a WOF with a spacer saver tyre fitted to the car.
{ Reason for WOF rejection
8. The vehicle has one or more of the following types of tyre fitted:
a) a space-saver tyre, or }
So it's OK as a spare.

I think that's what you ment anyway.

If you dont like space savers go to a wrecker and buy an appropriate full sized wheel.

If there is room to put it in your car. In some cars there isn't.

Can you take the spare out .
A lot of new cars don’t have a spear wheel nowadays.
Trucks don’t carry them as well.

s_nz, Sep 5, 10:37am
You don't even need to have a spare tire, but if you do have one it must be secured. I don't think there are rules beyond that.

Auto manufacturing is a competitive business, as such to remain competitive the brands need to build what people want as cheaply as possiable.

In some market segments (4x4 utes and full frame low range type SUV's), full size tires are demanded buy buyers, so are generally provided.

In other classes, going for a space saver (or even omitting the spare in favor of a can of go and a mini compressor or run flat tires) offers a lot of advanteages:
- Lower cost: pass on to customer or use to maintain margin.
- Lesser weight: faster acceleration, better fuel economy (latter especially important in markets where average emissions are regulated), more payload
- Packaging advantages - Allow for a extra low boot floor like the previous generation outlander, or allow for a storage tub under the boot floor.
- Allow bigger wheel & tire combo's on main wheels: Styling demand for large diameter tires and wheels - ditching a full sized spare means that the the tire size is not constrained by how big the spare tire location can be built.

Should note that modern tires are generally more durable tires of years ago. Also modern cars often have Tire pressure monitoring (mandated on new cars in the USA). This tech alerts the driver to low tire pressure, allowing them to take action before the tire blows out etc. I have never had to change a tire on the roadside, and am pretty comfortable driving with no spare (generally - made sure there was a spare when I was driving on Chatham island, and when driving on private forestry roads).

Should note that big trucks pretty much don't carry spares these day's. The weight of spares (often 3 different sizes across truck & trailer), along with the gear to change a tire eats into payload that can be sold. More cost effective to have a little tire service trick sent out to resolve any tire issues than it is for every truck to carry spares & tools.

They save even more money now by only provided an air compressor on many new cars. Nice weight reduction and more space. Just don't have a blowout on the desert road.
