My wife has 2010 DE Demio which she loves and refuses to let me upgrade to a later model. Her only complaint is at times the headlights are in her words "not Good Enough" What is the highest wattage bulbs that can be put in the car(polycarbonate covers) without the extra heat damaging them or can HID headlights from a later model if they fit be fitted. Thanks

bigfatmat1, Apr 9, 10:35pm
the wattage will be stamped on them. You can use + rated bulbs same wattage but brighter claims. Like +150% Hope this helps

Looks like some have replaced the whole headlight unit with projector headlight units etc. Mazdas often have a few traps when changing things on them.

What state are the lenses in? Upgraded bulbs won't help if they have yellowed up and the beam pattern gets scattered enough. This should be picked up during WoF if it's bad enough.

Are her eyes ok?

gazzat22, Apr 10, 12:12am
Wifes eyesight is fine .A daughter is a optometrist and wife and I both have regular tests and Checks. The lens are clear not at all yellowed if they get a road film on them I clean them with a cleaner. Might give the+150 bulbs a shot and see how they go.Cheers

When the bulbs say they are +150 they are comparing against the lowest legal levels of brightness, so you might find they only give you a fractional increase. Also they are more likely to blow sooner than stock bulbs.

A bit of a daft question, but have you had the headlight alignment checked? Not just to WOF standard but to the correct setting?

clark20, Apr 10, 9:45pm
Ok, some things you can do. Polish the lenses to make them clear (and don't run covers), install +150 bulbs like HELLA ultra plus, make sure they are aligned properly and if you want more get an auto electrician to install a relay kit to up the voltage at the bulb.

Just a thought for you. The DE Demio's come with the option of having factory spotlights in the bumper. That might be enough to make the difference. https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/1521684716.jpg
You would need the light /indicator stalk to match but the wiring will be there.
PS--THAT car sold about 3 years ago so I'm not trying to sell it or promote it in any way

Thanks Kaz.I might just try the 150w bulbs and make sure she shes me changing them for psychological reasons. As we used to say about some of the managers at Air NZ "they cant dazzle us with their brilliance so the try to baffle us with their Bullsh. t.Cheers

Those are fog lights.

kazbanz, Apr 12, 2:38am
they cast a pretty bright beam

utwo, Apr 12, 4:02am
But primarily to the sides of the road and only a short distance forward. Technically it's against the law to use them in clear conditions.

vtecintegra, Apr 12, 4:03am
If they're aimed correctly it'll be so low down that it won't be useful.

as per road code you are not meant to drive around with front spot lights on, a cop even told me off recently

utwo, Apr 13, 6:55am
You mean fog lights. Spot lights must only be wired to come on when your headlights are on high beam. If the symbol on the light switch and the dash warning light look like this, it's a fog light: https://images.app.goo.gl/ZN7LSKbP5PrsKNSP9

4.11, Apr 13, 5:03pm
same thing all extra lights being spot lights or fog lights should only turn on with the headlights and are still all illegal to be on all the time unless you are in fog

kazbanz, Apr 13, 6:52pm
The FACTORY way to turn Mazda Demio spotlights on is a double switch on the headlight /indicator stalk. turn the inner "ring" to on AND turn the headlights to at least low beam the spotties come on.
When it is fog lights then turn the headlights to at least park the foglights come on. The methodology is pretty universal across Mazda and other Jap manufacturers. The variation being on occasion the inner "ring" is replaced by a dash mounted rocker switch.
DEFINITELY cars come from Japan with "spotlights" rather than "foglights"
anyone doubting my word is MORE than welcome to visit with coffee and a choc fish and look at the 60 or so examples sitting within 30 m of me

Post #20 explains it well. I'd bet money that all those cars on your yard have the symbol shown in the following link on both the light switch and an indicator light on the instrument cluster when said switch is turned on: https://images.app.goo.gl/ZN7LSKbP5PrsKNSP9 The symbol (if it's not obvious) is a dipped beam shining through fog (the vertical wavy line representing fog). Some cars also have rear fog lights. The symbol is similar, but points in the opposite direction and isn't a dipped beam: https://images.app.goo.gl/72qpXvqZJ99Qbuqj6
Front fog lights are standard on pretty much all cars these days, except the base model. They're usually fitted low in the bumper because you want the light beam to penetrate under the fog. The beam pattern helps you see the edge of the road and the centre line and has a very short forward throw.
Spot lights aren't much use down low, because you want to light up the road 100 metres plus ahead.

kazbanz, Apr 14, 7:48pm
As my wife regularly points out-ive been wrong before and count on me being wrong again. but driving these cars the definition of the beam doesn't fit the description.

kazbanz, Apr 15, 5:24am
hey guys I don't hang onto an idea just to be bloody minded but this is genuinely bugging me. I just drove my wifes car -Mazda Verisa and sat in a couple of others and the light from the two "chin" lights aren't diffuse light but casting a decent beam.

utwo, Apr 15, 6:35am
There's an extremely simple way to confirm: Does the light switch and the indicator light on the gauge cluster have this symbol? https://images.app.goo.gl/ZN7LSKbP5PrsKNSP9

gazzat22, Apr 16, 10:36pm
They are"Driving Lights" not fog lights.

kazbanz, Apr 17, 1:53am
Exactly my though and cast a pretty bright beam
