Cleaning windscreens

rpvr, May 30, 11:39pm
Does anyone have a tried and true method of removing road film, wax, etc from windscreens? My partner's car has the most horribly smeary windscreen I have ever seen, and so far I've tried meths, isopropanol, various glass cleaners, and also used the isopropanol and then meths to clean the wiper blades. It's somewhat improved, but still far from perfect.

Meths and a muslin cloth or just a drive in the rain with some detergent in the washer bottle.

i think it was mineral turps that can dissolve some of silicone based waxes that people use on dash's etc.

Isoprop should do the job. I would replace the wiper blades. If theres clearly defined areas where its not wiping properly youve probably got low areas in the windcreen itself.

Thinners and change cloth regularly .that will get all the silicone gone. Then a very fine cutting compound VERY FINE

Soapy Steelopad
Extra detergent & a modest amount of water.
You need a Gentle flat hand & keep it foamy
Rinse well afterwards

Used that method for many years with excellent results.
USA caravan/ motorhome groups use it as well

Whatever you use, use a brand new microfibre cloth too. Fold the cloth into half, then quarters, Use one clean side until it's dirty, then turn over to another clean side. You'll have 8 clean sides this way. Change the wiper blades too.
Good Luck!

Windscreen fitter for my classics uses kerosene.

Once cleaned, pointless not replacing the wiper blades as per #7.

I can see them scrape there tablets with news on the screen over the windscreen As i doubt many know what a newspaper looks like now.
But yes it would work but a bit expensive to buy one just for that as its not worth to read any of the crap that's printed today.

get a new one fitted. fill the washer bottle and both of you learn how to use it properly

Wonder if ceramic hob cleaner will work, certainly does a good job on them.
Going to try it on one of mine soon, as it has a thin oily looking film i want gone(windsreen washers do not change it). I will use it on battery drill and pad, i had for doing headlights. Headlight cleaning polish is another thought too, will try that as well as i have both.

Thanks, some good suggestions here.

Just squirt a little dishwashing liquid on windscreen, lather it up with damp soft brush or mitt and hose off.

No dishwashing liquid does not harm anything. Besides you're hosing it all off anyway.

You could try dishwasher tablets. Apparently these are very good for cleaning the glass doors etc on your shower. They cut right thru the scum.

I find on the internet that Cellulose Thinner is suggested for removing Silicon. I guess they are talking about silicon sealant but i expect that would also cover any silicon product.
Id definitely wouldnt want to get it on any paint, and that lacquer thinner is probably another name for it.

Theres a Rustins brand cellulose thinner at Mitre10.

Epoxy thinners works really well. soak a rag and wax on, wax off technique.

There is a big difference between silicon and silicone products.

A fine cutting compound should work. I remember years ago having a windscreen that I couldnt seem to get perfectly clean. One day I drove through a big puddle on a clay driveway, when I turned the wipers on to clear it, the clay water cut through everything and I had a truly clear windscreen for the first time in ages. Sort of like a clay bar on paint I guess.

I clean my Wiper Blades with White Vinegar. just soak a cloth in it, and Wipe the Blades, works for me.
