Is it just me or is it just in Taranaki that drivers don’t know the difference? Or do they just turn everything on because they can? Fog lamps are only meant to be used when it’s foggy which is less than once in a blue moon around here.

Rangiora drivers are just as bad , drive around when its dark with no lights on also .

sw20, Aug 1, 2:16am
Same everywhere in the country. No enforcement from the police. Would be a great revenue earner at $150 a pop with current legislation.

People who use rear fog lamps in clear conditions should lose their license for six months IMO.

sarahb5, Aug 1, 2:17am
Same for drivers with only one working headlamp

tamarillo, Aug 1, 3:44am
I dont think people Know that they are fog lights, instead think the have driving lights and use them.

sarahb5, Aug 1, 4:00am
I wonder what they think the fog light symbol represents then?

alowishes, Aug 1, 4:09am
So right!
Nothing worse than following a car with its rear fog light on for 30 odd km at night, it happens a bit between Cromwell and Queenstown.

They should really be reading the manual to get acquainted with their cars and rereading the road code.

sarahb5, Aug 1, 4:15am
Now you’re just being silly - why would they do that?

wind.turbine, Aug 1, 4:50am
I personally don't have a problem with front fog lights as its not that gleary, those new HID headlights are ten times worse as well as people retrofitting illegal LEDs in place of their normal bulbs.

I find people that have a head light out or use different powered bulbs are much harder on the eyes!
And yea the rear fog lights is a diff no no, you cannot see brake lights come one when you have them running

sarahb5, Aug 1, 5:24am
Yeah those ultra bright lights on higher vehicles on our bumpy roads are awful when you drive a smaller and lower car - I feel like I’m constantly being flashed

gunhand, Aug 1, 5:32am
Well Im glad Im not the only one who hates it. Whoever designed them didn't put a whole lot of thought into them. Prob done on computer modeling which generally is nothing like real life performance.
They flash all the colours of the rainbow while bouncin up and down on our goat tracks. But they are very good from drivers point of view.

sarahb5, Aug 1, 5:39am
My son retrofitted LED headlights but I made him get them properly aligned

pauldw, Aug 1, 8:36am
Fog lamps don't add anything at furthest reach of headlamps so would be useless driving lights.

marte, Aug 1, 11:50am
I'm not sure why others use them, except to point out that their car is not a police car.
But I use mine because I know that they don't glare incoming traffic & importantly they illuminate directly in front of the car, showing potholes & other small stuff on the road better.
But most importantly, they illuminate under parked cars & I can see if there's a cat under it, cats don't run out onto the road nearly as often if my foglights are on.
They must be able to see them better or it shows the car up better or something.

What does get at me is the amount of cars driving at night with only one headlight. And cars driving during the day with their headlights on, even worse, on fool beam.

martin11, Aug 1, 6:32pm
Some cars do not have manuals now .

pauldw, Aug 1, 8:30pm
If you are going much above 50 unless you see and react to things at the far reach of dip beam you won't avoid them. Your reaction time stops you doing anything about things that happen right in front of the car. Fog lights will just show you what you are about to hit. If it is really foggy you will be going slower.

martin11, Aug 1, 8:41pm
If they were not in the car originally they are illegal .

sarahb5, Aug 1, 8:56pm
No they’re not - can’t stop you changing bulbs and they passed the WOF - light bar didn’t though

nzmax, Aug 1, 9:02pm
Oddly, one of the late 90's cars I was 3rd owner of, referred to the lower bumper lamps as foglights in the handbook, and as daytime/driving lamps in the brochure. Car was assembled in NZ so obviously for the NZ market, and brochure was printed in NZ, but the handbook was printed in Japan. Switch on the light stalk had a foglamp symbol, but being a subsequent owner I couldnt guarantee the switch hadnt been replaced in the past. Lamps from the Japanese import version, usually referred to as foglamps, had a slightly different lens from the NZ ones but same bulb. Which one was correct, the brochure printed in NZ for the NZ market cars or the handbook printed in Japan for many markets?

clark20, Aug 1, 9:55pm
Sorry, just because it got a WOF doesn't mean they are legal, they do not have compliance to any lighting standard (replacement LED bulbs)

vtecintegra, Aug 1, 10:30pm
More like just because it passed a wof doesn't mean it should have.

gazzat22, Aug 1, 11:31pm
People who used to, and still do drive behind me at night with their headlights on full.I managed to stop it by putting a large old mirror from the back of a china/display cabinet in the back of my Hatchback which gave them their light back.

sarahb5, Aug 1, 11:33pm
So they’re not compliant and got a WOF - that’s dumb - aren’t they supposed to fail you for non-compliance? Previously failed one of our cars because the tint strip was too far down the windscreen

sarahb5, Aug 1, 11:33pm
That’s genius
