I think it varys from car to car (and depends on how lead-footed the driver is!). My 320 Merc uses far less fuel with the cruise controll on.

I remember I drove a 3.8 commodore once with cruise (late 90's model of some sort) - if it was set for 100, then you braked to 50, then hit resume, it would absolutely boot it back up to 100. Because of that sort of functionality I suspect it would only use less gas on 'gentle' roads, not one with a lot of slow corners.

Wow, thanks for all the replies there.I'll have a look at SuperCheap and read the guff on the one they sell.If it comes to pass then I'll report here.As for the commodore booting it back to 100, I guess you could increase speed manually and then set the CC , so avoiding the grunt sequence.

I know what you mean, I recently had a Holden rentaland it wasn't the best. I've found the cruise controll on most Aussie cars to be rather crude compared to many European makes.

I would agree on it depending on how lead footed the driver is, to how much of a fuel saving you would get. With my Dad and his style of driving there is a big saving when using cruise. With my Mum there is next to no difference. The only car I have owned with it, was a 1986 Commodore. All I can say for it,is it maintained speed really well.

Got a '98 primera 2 litre, nice car, but no cruise control. Are there any after-market cruise controls available, and what's involved in fitting one!

with more powerful cars like the comms and falcon cruise control is good because they have the power to cruise up hills, a 2ltr I think its a waste of time.

unfortunately falcons and commodores have only in recent years begun producing more power than 2 litres.

Cruise control is all about comfort and convenience not fuel economy.

Nope. A late model 2.0 Mondeo makes less power and torque than a VL Commodore.
I'm quite interested at the retro fitting C/C idea, anyone have any useful info! Not pointless waffling about economy.
