just a thought, if a speed limit is set here, and a vehicle can exceed it with ease, why has no one looked into a form of software that can limit a cars speed with a chip in the ECU or something! ive had an idea with a sort of software thing that my mate wants to build for me. would it be viable in a country like this!
basics of it are pretty much it has a chip connected to the vehicle, its speed is limited to say 55 kph around town, and 105 kph out of town. at the 100kph signs heading out of town would be a sort of signal that talks to the chip allowing the car to exceed 55 kph. if they made it a law it could also be integrated to a similar system like load jack or whatever it is. so then everyone would have to have it and tampering would show on a computer system etc. would something like this actually be worthwhile!

Because speeding is simply not the end of the world like the police say it is
END OF THREAD.seriously
BTW in all seriousness it's possible but kinda stupid when we should either just train drivers better.

its not always our drivers that are the problems. ive seen some pretty shocking tourists, like the german dude pushing 140 to make it to yesterdays rugby game. but more to the point i was thinking about something like this to be compulsory for young drivers who cant hep but try show off to their mates

oh dear, you dont seriously think that it would be beneficial to be limited to 105 do you!
We have enough restrictions as it is, we don't want the government to take away any more freedom.
Stupid idea, this needs no more discussion from me!

Remember those bells on jap imports that used to go *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding*!

no way id wanna be stuck behind some wanker and have a maximum of 105kph to get passed him ,wat happens when they speed up at the end of the passing lane you both end up doin 105 kph as you run out of lanes!.

bad idea
whynot7,
Sep 12, 9:54pm
do you work in a government department !
ginga4lyfe,
Sep 12, 9:54pm
then what happens in an emergency were you will have to exceed the speed limit!
crzyhrse,
Sep 12, 9:58pm
Dumbest idea ever.
I fully expect it to be implemented next year.

Great idea, duno what an ECU is but I am sure my car hasn't got one.
jezz43,
Sep 12, 10:04pm
of course things like that would be taken into account. like an emergency override etc. its all just a thought if something like this could be implemented on a large scale. andin any case. is there really any need to exceed the limit other than on a track! IIRC a japanese skyline had something similar, and when the GPS of the vehicle detected you were on a track it removed the governor. its just done a bit differently
morrisman1,
Sep 12, 10:23pm
its a dumb idea. I dont want to pass anyone at 105km/h, I want to get past as quick as I can and I couldnt give a rats arse what the speed limit is when I am doing so.
Yes there is a need to exceed the speed limit every now and then and we cannot possibly dream of all the situations where it would be necessary because there are just too many. Usually it would be a 'saving your arse' situation where speed is absolutely necessary.

If it was made in the last 20 years it will.

Some extremely naïve fool is clearly swallowing the government 'speed kills' propaganda hook, line and sinker.
jezz43,
Sep 12, 10:49pm
really! how many times have you complained about a boy racers speed! how many school kids with cars have you seen speeding around schools! more to the point, ever known anyone killed by a speeding driver who thought it was cool hooning around show boating>
pollymay,
Sep 12, 10:52pm
I left it hooked up on my racecar after I did my engine conversion. Would start at the top of 2nd gear and by the time i got to 4th gear passengers were starting to hang on for dear life
BTW op is either a troll or a waste of my time. True facts, and if you implemented this crap I'd ignore it. I get too little enjoyment in life as is without rules that make no sense or even worse the ones that have effected me negatively for no reason other than propaganda and soccer mums.

Simple. Because even WITH cars that can break the speed limit, we modify them. make cars that dont, and we will midify harder and lastly, because a fiuckload of money is made off speeding

So in summary you're proposing:
A satelite or communications aware device that can be retrofitted to, say, several thousand different manufacturer computers of various specification, including but not limited to piggyback, dual comp and multi-cpu systems like Ferrari's Manetto platform, and which can override the numerous user programmable CPUs.
Either: An all of road communications wireless network OR satelite uplink (+ corresponding communications array) - AND the associated administrative overhead and management of said network
A solution that is cost affordable and can be rolled out in an acceptable timeframe.
And a solution that essentially makes the road more dangerous and can be immediately negated by someone with a a carb fed, non injected and supercharged 7 litre V8.
Sounds like a winner to me - you should present a business plan to the Green Party - they're stupid enough to waste a few million taxpayer dollars on white elephant project scoping groups that ultimately conclude this sort of idea isn't going to be achievable instead of just asking some recent uni graduate with a modicum of engineering, comp Sci or even project management experience.

Also fyi - its "LoJack" not 'Load jack'.

Lets also limit emergency services and public transportation vehicles to a maximum speed of 7kph - for the lulz.

Soreading the reply here your problem is those damn tourists over here for the Rugby World Cup!Dont worry about them they will just be normal tourists again soon ambling along at 80kph taking photos and you complaining about them having a holiday and spending money for our economy.
I have a perfect speed control on my vehicle! It is called a foot!

Rather than artificially limiting an engine, just limit the engine.Make cars with a top speed of 105km/h at peak-horsepower and watch the accident rated drop - acceleration causes accidents and kills as well. Best of all it is cheap to implement, it will even lower the expense of owning a car!
