A Rover 95 is a car.
A Rover 75 is a car.
There's no such thing as a Rover 97.
A 1997 Rover is probably not too bad if it is cheap, AND it has a new WoF & Rego on it, AND you can convince yourself it's one of the ones with a Honda engine not one of the ones with an Austin-Rover engine.

That's a very good price. Check the condition of the oil and water, any signs of mixing generally means it's overheated. However, if it hasn't been used for long trips, it can just be condensation in the oil as the car hasn't been allowed to get up to temperature. Often a good run will cure this. If it has overheated at all, it's important to work out why and make sure the problem was fixed. Often it's a problem with bleeding the coolant system leading to air locks, or a problem with the thermostat. Neither are major issues in themselves but like any alloy engine if left and it leads to overheating, can cause more major issues.
Other things to look at: at their current age, some cars are having issues with headlinings dropping, but certainly not all. The cloth trim on the door cards is also at the age where the glue can be giving way, but both of these are very easy to spot issues. The CVT automatic is OK, but not the strongest box in the world. The manual gearbox isn't too bad, and will certainly cope with the stress from the 1600. They don't tend to rust, and no real problems with the suspension and brakes, but always check for condition.
Very competent, comfortable car that handles well, if not overly sporty (the vi version solves that problem though). Mum's 97 216 has nearly 300,000 km on it and still going strong.

Useful, chuck away runabout for that price.
Be a bit wary if the plan is to travel long distance out of town on a regular basis.

Excellent reading mate thank you, and the roof lining is all good Yeah i thought it was a good price, considering pre 90s cars are selling for 1000-1600 approx. Thanks for your input.

There really is nothing to be scared about, particularly if you check the oil and coolant once in a while.

I'd check my bank managers views first. Have you the vaguest idea what spares for those things cost! And remember that they are notorious for special parts. I ran one in UK for a few years and it nearly broke me. If you really want a european, stick with Volva coz they are built like brick sh*houses and do last.

Rover, rover, won't turn over. Some cars are not good at any price. I wouldn't.seriously.

Expensive and specialist parts! really! Not at all, most service parts, and a lot of general parts, are kept in stock in NZ. Parts supply is pretty good for them, still an official agent here for X-Part (the parts suppliers) and a number of specialist garages around the place. Parts are more expensive than for an MGB or Mini, but no more expensive than other comparable cars.

Bloody great little pocket rocket they are. Had one for 2 years and learnt that they had an over heating problem, had been told if it hadn't happened already, then it will happen, but once fixed should be all good, think it was to do with the type of head gasket. On keeping an eye on them on here for awhile and seeing some advertised as parts as had overheated it proved right.

Was thinking of Leyland P76.

speak of the devil. Just searched, rover 216 slion here and there are 3 cheap ones out of 11 that mention headgasket problems and they are around the 100k mark, I was told when owning mine the overheating problem will likely occure around the 100 thousand km mark.

Head gasket problems were ongoing with my dad's Honda (216)! And they started well before 100 thou. K. He traded it on an Ocatavia. The best VW Golf that VW never built!

It's not really the headgasket that gives the problems, they will go if the car overheats, but seldom cause the car to overheat. Generally a much simpler problem, such as thermostat or airlock.
