I've been picked up with my bicycle at least once. I got so many punctures I'd run out of tubes and had to stick my thumb out. I remember a woman with an HQ wagon gave me a ride back into Dunedin from Port Chalmers one night. I haven't picked up HHers for years (either car full of family or still in the city). I used to - usually in one of my MGs so they couldn't be carrying much and had to be alone. No problems but like another poster said - it seemed like they were all smokers.

When I was studying a friend of mine would sometimes skip lectures, grab his surfboard and bag, stand on the road with his thumb out and get a ride to Piha. It always worked for him??

Depends how I feel, and how they are looking/making an effort, etc.
I once picked up a fella from Montana, he couldn't get over the number of sheep here, his dad was a cattleman, dad called sheep "range maggots" LOL.
On the other hand, whilst on the big O.E. I HH from south of Barcelona, through Spain, France and back to London, a week of fun and exploration, with great rides from Spaniards, French, Brits, Yanks, Germans, 'twas the summer of '67.

Hitched to Wanganui years ago, near dark just out of Bulls. Just starting to spit a bit, got picked up by a girl, 19/20 yo. Got yakking, turns out her friend had moved from NP to Thames a year or so before that, her friend was a good friend of mine who lived about 5 doors down!I was the first HH she picked up and felt sorry for me because of the weather. She even brought me a feed of Chinese! That's it no more story to tell.

Been picked up by hundreds hitchhiking around nz.ended up good friends with alot of them, its such a small country, someone knows someone lol
15 years of hitchhiking, met some good folks. got picked up by a car load of drunk girls lol ended up getting out early because the driver was drinking, bugger that.
ut the best story was I was hitching from taihape and a guy drove past and said, hey bro, if you get stuck come down to my house just down the road there, you will see my car.And for the only time in my hitching life, I got stuck. So I went down and knocked on the door and his kids and grandfather who lived there came to the door lolSo I went in sat down, had a yarn, whilst I could see his wife wondering who this strange guy was in her house, which was fair enough. So we had a couple of beers together and he asked me what my second name was, and I told him.he then asked me who my father was and stopped short when I told him and so did his wife
for over 20 years I'd been looking for my sister that I had never met, because my father left her mother and she didnt know where we were or anything like that.it actually turned out that she was lookin for us for a long time and by share coincidence, that guy and his family took my sister in and bought her up as one of there own children and she had been trying to track us down too.Well the wife and everyone in the house went quiet, she started crying and then said, "we have been trying to trak you down for years, your sister is part of our family and she has just moved to nelson".this was how I found my sister.out of it and we still talk about this today. The best hitchig experience of my time anyway :)

I ran out of gas a little while ago, fortunately only a couple of k's from a station but up and over a bloody big hill, in the rain.So I started walking and put the thumb out, got ignored by lots of cars (as expected) and walked the whole way to the gas station.I bought a gas can and filled it up and began the walk back, again with the thumb out.Because I was carrying a fuel can this time, I was picked up almost straight away.
So, if you need to hitch, carry an empty gas can.

picked up a scruffy guy in black t shirt on the way to Kumeu car show last year. Nice guy, fellow petrol head. Worked out bloody well as i had to park quite far from the entrance to the show, and i had a big full chilli-bin to haul in, i would have busted my ringpiece trying to carry it by myself. By the time we got to my mates stand we were in need of a cold beer. Even offered him a ride back at the end of the day,

Hey, that actually DID happen to me.I thought when I stopped it was a guy and a girl, but it was two girls.Picked them up in Taupo and took them to Bulls, stopping for an icecream at Flat Hills. They were drop dead gorgeous.Problem was though, they were both 19, and I was 38!Made me feel like a dirty old man, even at that tender age.
