Absolutely, could not agree more! You either get it or you dont I think. I can understand both points of view. but I am ok with paying more for the joy a decent V8 gives me.

kingfisher21, Oct 15, 12:44pm
Smallish town and short trips, not the best for it, I have seen it up around 20l per 100km

scotty20001, Oct 15, 12:46pm
yes the LS1 in standard Commodore guise is very chocked up and restricted standard, nothing an air intake and a ECU chip and a decent exhaust doesn't fix though.

magicmat, Oct 15, 6:39pm
Yes it appears so. I noticed the one I am looking at already has the cold air induction system added so it appears a previous owner knew this.
I would never have noticed that if not for this thread so well worth posting!

Holden deliberately detuned the LS1 as they didnt think the Aussies could handle the power jump from 185KW to 250KW or so.
Standard SS in the VT was 225KW on release. Easy to get 300KW with good exhaust, cold air intake, and ECU retune.

Also consider the 540 or 740i BMWs which are probably the best priced V8 luxury cars around and pretty much bullet proof. I managed low 8s in my old 540i open road. The LS1s are a grouse engine (be aware they are pretty quiet standard so you may need to spend dollars on the exhaust to get the sound) but as a whole package they don't compare with a 5 series. Test drive a VX SS/Calais and a 2000 540i and you'll see what I mean. If you want to go aftermarket disregard everything I wrote lol.

magicmat, Oct 15, 7:13pm
I know they are good cars, but my 'daddy' (who is pretty well off) let me buy a Mercedes from him for a crazy price a few years ago. As much as I loved it at first, when problems started to occur it became apparent that the German cars are so complex its frankly a bitch to work on them. I want something more simple to deal with if any issues arise. The Holdens have a nice amount of power, but arent particularly complex - I like that simplicity

16.4L 100km around town VE ss. 3L min at full noise LS1 in boat probably got something to do with the 2 turbos on it though

scotty20001, Oct 16, 9:31am
nice!

magicmat, Oct 16, 3:34pm
Holy crap "3L a min"! Glad I dont pay your boats gas bill!

magicmat, Oct 17, 5:47pm
Well I am now the very happy owner of an LS1 based Holden.

You guys were right (as I suspected), it is quite thirsty around town but I am still surprised how good it is on the open road considering I gave it a good thrashing. Very happy - thanks for all the help/advice people!

kingfisher21, Oct 17, 6:17pm
What did you end up getting!

richardmayes, Oct 17, 6:45pm
Seems like a well-thought-out plan.

There's been many a time I've been stationary in the motorway, up the date of another stationary car, and I've felt. "man, this would be AWESOME if I was in a V8 right now."

magicmat, Oct 18, 5:01am
2001 VX and regarding above; yes it will be doing the work run most of the time but when its the weekend etc. yesterday, it had a hard time up and down some back road straights and *that* alone made it worth every cent!

(edit to say) Before anyone says it - yes it is a 'mid-life crisis' purchase ha ha

Age is just a state of mind.so long as you keep good health.

bellky, Oct 18, 1:35pm
it is amazing to me that you guys are using such thick (10w 60) oil in such a relatively modern vehicle.

i use 20w 50 in the old 1970's rotary technology

magicmat, Oct 18, 3:58pm
I actually think this figure is probably not too wrong or maybe a bit low - then its how you drive it I guess. Though I am bit relieved as its nothing like 16L/100k's as I had read.

sw20, Oct 18, 4:00pm
Just get one of those S/C V6 Commies. They are fast. 0-100 7 seconds.

scotty20001, Oct 18, 4:11pm
ahh the joys of living in a congested city no wonder why you love your gutless shitboxes.

crankypants69, Oct 18, 4:25pm
my vy2 ute sits at around 16l/100kms around town, and thats not pushing it too hard

magicmat, Oct 18, 4:53pm
Ouch. and I am sure a ute is probably lighter too.

cowboy110, Oct 18, 5:23pm
Enjoy your "mid life crisis" magicmat.I got the 57 Chev for the weekends and have a 06 V8 Commodore as a "run about".A man's gotta have a few pleasures in life. After all, We're a long time dead!

magicmat, Oct 18, 6:36pm
Cheers dude - thats how I see it too and I have not enjoyed getting out of the house at night and just driving for many years. Now to work on that weekend car.

rod525, Oct 19, 5:59am
5.7lt Adventra LX8 with OTR CAI, mild big bore, headers and ECU/Dyno tune, we get around 16.1 around town and 12.4 open road.
