anyone know where to get a soft top that does not cost half the price of the car!

fiatracer, Nov 11, 10:03am
www.mx5mart.co.nz for a start. The cover alone is around $500, or around a grand fitted. If that's too steep be fortunate you dont own a new beetle soft-top. I have heard the official price is over 20k.

Yes thats cheap, the Toyota MR-S one is around $10,000.

I swapped a hard top for a Big horn a couple of years ago

Basic Plastic window model from $229 USD, shipping to NZ is another $100USD I think. They do ship to NZ

Best to get a glass window one, with demister if it's an Nb model. An Nb roof with glass window will fit an Na MX5 (but Na's aren't usually wired for a demister)
There's also a "rain rail" which may need replacing, as they go brittle and crack and leak into the boot or rear parcel shelf. Some of the aftermarket ones are better than OEM - better material.
If bringing in a top from the US, bring in a rain rail just in case.If you don't need it when doing the roof, sell on trademe to get your $ back.

To be clear here, the NB and NA frames are slightly different, but the NB frame bolts onto an NA car no trouble at all.

Just don't go buying NB fabric and trying to fitit over an NA frame, probably won't work.

glass windows are over rated.the plastic ones are fine. lets face it you only change the top every 10 years anyway

thejazzpianoma, Nov 11, 7:14pm
Beetle is $4500 - $5000 for a genuine replacement hood (no bows etc though). But you can be a bit sneaky and get a non-genuine one but made out of the exact same oem material for $1000. Obviously other imitations are cheaper again.

do not believe you.my buddy just got a new soft roof for his 355f1 ferraribought in from italy and fitted in new Zealand, all up $5500 including a new frame and all new bolts,

Was looking at an MX5 at Turners a few days ago. Top was down to make it look sexy.Pulled top up to look and could see the real reason 2 big holes with stick-on patches that were lifting.

Glass window means that you don't have to muck around when lowering the roof - if you want to get reasonable life out of it.

mm12345, Nov 12, 7:40am
Those guys are okay / good to deal with, but those prices are for complete roofs with frames/hardware, in assorted used condition.

pandai, Nov 12, 9:06am
Soft tops are often around $600US ex shipping, the cheapest way tends to be to get one from the US.I just looked up the prices on convertibletops.com, the one for a BMW Z3 is $410 there.Getting one locally (which is what I did) is $2k, and that's without fitting too!Same brand (Robbins). The Mazda roofs there seem to be well priced.

franc123, Nov 12, 10:27am
Yes not uncommon I'd have thought, you wonder how many get put up for sale after a replacement roof has been priced.

katyj2, Nov 13, 3:58pm
Thanks to all posters. That gives me a few websites to check out! Looks like soft tops cost a lot less in the good old U.S.of A. Anywhere here in NZ that that I can get a soft top at reasonable price!

heres one,Listing #: 422663896 - just get someone clever in your area to fit it for you. Can't take the brains of an arch bishop to do surely, google the instuctions :-)or start calling all the mazda wreckers around. Good luck.

Also check out the MX5 Club classifieds or ask them where to get one cheap etchttp://www.mx5forum.co.nz/adverts.php

magoo2, Nov 13, 5:34pm
allow about $250 for someone to fit one for you if you cant do it yourself

mm12345, Nov 13, 6:19pm
Are you sure of that!It takes many hours apparently to do the job properly.

fordcrzy, Nov 13, 7:38pm
even the zip window can be done when seated.
most glass windows dont work with roll/style bars. the plastic window iss fine .no point in getting a glass window on a NA

katyj2, Nov 14, 11:41am
Thanks to posters again. I'll check with the MX5 club someone sure to know nz placeto get one. happy to give fitting a go if i can get a decent price on a top. Thanks for u.s. websites certainly a lot cheaper than here even after carriage costs. Thanks Icocochanel i'll check it out.

katyj2, Nov 17, 5:14pm
Looks like somewhere around $600 or so is best price likely to getin NZ anyway. A load of work involved in fitting hood but then again first quote was $1400 so does not seem so bad by comparison. ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW OF MX5 SOFT TOP that can beat that!
