They are saying on news that he hit a cable Do you hear the moron on the clip, don't worry about that - call the news room. yeah don't call 111 for the pilot we can sell this tape for money

I was wondering, a cable around the tail rotor might cause the tail section to snap off like that if the rotor was stopped suddenly and all that torque was loaded into the frame.

more likely thatone of the main rotors hit the cable and broke, the resulting vibrations (as seen in the video) would be more than sufficient to cause the structural failure which has resulted in the tail section seperating from the fuselage

I don't think it was his tailrotor. If you watch the footage you can see his towline underneath break and flick up - watch the mounting between the skids bounce up and down. I wonder if the cable flicked up into the main rotor around the helicopter body

snapped winch cables are a cause of a lot of accidents involving lifting choppers. highly possible, and a lot more likely than the tail rotor

I would even hazard a guess and say that the gunshot sound you hear at 25sec is the sound of the snapped cable reaching the camera

It looks like the engine and main rotor driveshaft starts to thrash side-to-side on its mountings, (like something rotating has become seriously unbalanced) and that shaking pretty quickly breaks up the cockpit body of the helicopter.
Every film I've seen of helicopters losing their tail rotors, the fuselage starts to rotate in the opposite direction to the way the main rotor is going. But it's completely smooth when this happens, no thrashing around like what this helicopter did.

i think i have flown in that machine when it was first imported and painted yellow.

You won't be flying in it again!
richard198,

I think it's more likely that the man on the ground pulled on the tether attached to the chopper and caused the crash!

lol maybe if he was superman.or chuck norris

Makes ya feel lucky doesn't it! I've flown in 6 helicopters that are now wrecks! One was about an hour after I got out. Add to that, about 5 Fletcher's.
Looks like the driveshaft shat itself.

With your record.give up flying.

I've watched the footage over and over and I cant see the rotor strike they speak of. Will watch with interest for the CAA finding on this

You can see it on the big screen if it's slowed down a bit, there's a blue cable hanging parallel to the black pylon in the foreground and it gets drawn into the rotor. One News just showed it.

It was the idiot holding the cable, he pulled on it. I'd hate to be in his shoes.

The newer footage that 3 (and 1!) showed clearly shows that the main rotor snagged a cable, I wouldn't be surprised if said cable actually wrapped around and guillotined the tail.

You might laugh but choppers are finely balanced we do a lot of work with them lifting and transport on and off hill tops. At the hover or comming in to land they can be pulled off balance very easerly if the pilot doesnt react quick enough ie you never try hop in or load while on the hover unless pilot is aware or you will pull it over. However in this instance it looks like the crew on the ground flicked that cable in to main rota

Thank God it didn't land on a nearby Superyacht. That would've created a real fuss.

I rest my case! (Not superman or Chuck Norris) (The ground crew are lucky their hand wasn't ripped off!)

Should add its thepilot that keeps it balaced with his counter actions ,plenty of hand / feet coordination required to keep it in the sky
