the helmets dont work. they are not fit for the purpose and cant work. they are proofed to withstand a 20kph impact. absolutley useless and as i said all cyclists killed lately have been wearing helmets. wear them by all means but get rid of the law. then i can get rid of my laminated card.

Me too! At least make the clowns display some form of identification so they can be reported when going through red lights. I almost collected one on saturday & he gave me the fingers!. I wasnt the one running a red light. My mate was telling me to stop so he could smash him over; all I can say is the cyclist is lucky I didnt stop because my mate wouldve beaten the hell out of him.

As a choice yes. I am not against helmets just the mandatory law. and I know they are almost useless.

That is dangerous and you should get ticketed. Nobody gives a tinkers cuss about elderly pedestrians anymore but cars reversing out of driveways skittle a few errant cyclist each year. give yourself a smack.

Have you tried to cycle down my road with a tank of gas on wobbling about! Besides reversing out of your driveway without looking is a HUGE HUGE HUGE no no cause kids so easily get run over. It is really up to the cyclist to stay out of the way of bigger things that's a given but I have no time for arrogant inattentive drivers like the one across the road from me, she almost reversed into my car after I'd just pulled out of my driveway. Also almost ran our cat over. If you can help it you shouldn't even be reversing onto the road period.

Yes the problem is cars are so quiet these days and if they have a hedge hiding them you are in trouble. I deliver fliers by bicycle and I am always aware to be careful on the footpath. Oh we have a blanket exemption to go on the footpath is we are delivering papers or circulars. but care is needed!

I rather stay on the roads and leave the tracks for your dirt bike. Very few places to avoid you petrolheads. Luckily I can ride my trike on wide walking tracks

It is safer to ride a bike on the roads than a footpaths depending on your speed. Faster I cycle, the closer to the center of my lane I ride. Going downhill on a highway I ride on the middle of my lane for safety if I go faster than 50 kph. Then when my speef slows down on uphill I try to keep on the left of the white edge line. As I ride a trike there often is not enough space and I need to keep enough space to avoid glass on the road.

hey there I have trikes as well that my wife and I both use and also rent out. How do you find the road camber affects you! We are ok in town but open roads can be challenging. You may be aware that helmets are optional for trikes as they are for unicycles.

tax them all!

Hell yeah! And tax running shoes as well. Cant have people running all over the place for FREE.

OK, how about paying according to vehicle weight! My van weighs 2.2 tons and I paid $242 RUC for 5000km. My trike weighs 22kg so it would be $2.42 for 5000km. Now, how do I attach a hubometer in my tricycle!

Mine is Greenspeed tadpole recumbent trike. I am used to leaning over to combat the camber but it is a bit annoying. What sort of trikes you are talking about!

Well you are an ill informed individual.I watched my 6yo boy arse off his bike (as they do) on a tennis court and i can asure you with the helmet it would have been a nasty outcome, the helmet was shagged and done its job very well. And in a proffesional capacity I have picked up kids you have fallen off bikes at high speed and had major helmet damage but no real head or facial injury. I my self have had an off (being a twat on a bmx track) and cracked a rib or two and was thankfull I had a helmet on as well. The ill informed or ignorant annoy me.

Since we're talking about safety, how about cyclists using lights on their bikes! Not many are using headlights at night, and you don't notice them at intersections.

Talking about helmets, I have seen some dangerous helmets some cyclists insist wearing. I mean those old polystyrene shells which used to have a hard plastic cover. Helmet should slide if it hits against a pavement. But those bare polystyrene shells do not slide but grips and breaks the neck of the wearer! Better to have no helmet than that old thing.

There are some good LED lights which are very bright. Battery lasts long but the light output fades once the battery goes flat. Good idea would be to have two flashing rear LED lights. Two white LED lights to the front and you are more visible at night than during daytime.

Lovely yes I intend getting a recumbent at some stage. I rode one once and it was great and really comfortable. Mine are 2 avanti bikes customised and with a diff. 2 wheels at the rear, 7 speed. There is a bit of a knack to riding them the balance is different but they are good for cruising and you can stow a lot of gear on them. I also have a clip on child seat for rentals.

Did you take the helmet back and get a refund! It should not have been as you say shagged after a fall on a tennis court. That makes no sense.
gunhand,
Jun 23, 7:13pm
No, we got a new one, thats what you do when any helmet sustains a hard impact. It was a hard fall as he was moving quickly.
gadgetman,

I see, with a saddle rather than seat. So you stand upright, good for slow speed city cruising. My trike can take winding downhills faster than my van. I got a video of me riding down Paekakariki Hill and Helen followed behind with my van having hard time to keep up with me.

I am not against helmets just the mandatory aspect. I have a medical exemption but also feel they are not fit for the purpose. All cycle fatalities over the last few years have been wearing helmets. Many fatalities are at low speed and the helmets should have saved lives but did not. 1 man hit a dog at low speed, went over the bars and died of head injuries and he had a helmet. I do my best to ensure I dont fall off, I obey the road rules and if necessary give way to everyone. I feel safe cycling but am aware of my vulnerability. the helmet law regrettably has killed commuter cycling and this occurred for a variety of reasons. I have been commuter cycling for 50 years and never had a problem apart from the odd jack ass motorist but this is very seldom.
