sump was all loose, being held together by that orange stuff, found she is a 4 bolt main, have to remove the steering rack to remove the sump completely, hopefully can do the job with the engine in place, as long as i can get the torque wrench in there

skin1235, Jan 23, 2:35pm
drop the rack! of let go the mounts and lift the motor!
many an old 202 block got a new piston ( they popped the tops off real regular) by jacking the motor to remove the sump, otherwise it was engine out time, got it down to an hour and a half to fit a new slug ( head off, sump off, slug out and new one in etc), just less than an hour for a camshaft, they ripped the fiber cogs to shreds quite often too)

mk3zephyr, Jan 23, 4:02pm
yea went and had a look before and i can just unbolt the rack and move it forward a tad so the sump drops out, lucky its on a saloon car so plenty of room to work around.
Anyone roughly know what a starter solenoid costs for a chev starter!

mk3zephyr, Jan 23, 8:15pm
ok moved the rack out of the way no problem, pulled out #7 slug and the bearings are toast, crank looks ok though. What gets me is all the rings were in the same configuration ie the gaps were all lined up together and not staggered, also the top compression ring (the one with the dot stamped into it was in the 2nd groove and the other in the top. I am presuming all the other pistons will be the same, bloody back yard mechanic cowboys

petermcg, Jan 23, 8:28pm
Bro do you need to borrow any books on the chevy motor.

mk3zephyr, Jan 23, 8:37pm
nah cheers though, just rather peeved off with the cowboys who assembled this motor, the way the rings were configured its no wonder the engine had so much blow by and was eating oil, I'll stick it on the engine stand tomorrow and whip out one of the big ends and go price some new bearings and rings up, then i can start putting the old tart back together, should really go get the bores honed 1st i feel so the rings can bed in properly. We have a few weeks off till our next race meeting so there is no rush, just sorted out the cooling issue and now this lol, ah well fun and games huh

I want all of you round for a bbq the day i put mine in the old girl. i reckon between all of us we should get it running sweet in an afternoon. Good reading this thread, if only for future reference.

skin1235, Jan 24, 6:37am
not un-expected with the other issues getting it to find it has been raped by a Neanderthal, how frkn hard is it to put them together right, if you know how to pull them apart you'd think they'd now how to put them back together again . how bad is the glazing, maybe just a good wipe out with some fine wet and dry if not too bad make you wonder tho', check land clearances and ring groove depth - I acquired one that had only just gone back together and was down on compression plus smoking real bad, found they'd pressed one gudgeon too far, had to bore that hole out 160thou and get an insert to bring it back to standard, two lovely gouges down one end of the bore, it had 3 piece oil rings, with the old packer piece from the previous set left in there 'to give it more pressure on the oil rings', new set of slugs etc. virtually a rebuild later and she was sweet, but not the cheapy I thought it was

1fordluva, Jan 24, 6:45am
Come on zeph,I know I am a ford guy.
But we need pictures for the epic rebuild!
Show us what these back yard bum bandits did to it.

pollymay, Jan 24, 3:31pm
The sets are pretty cheap (relatively). I guess it depends on what you can find. Time for some domed pistons! :D

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:33pm
those piston pics would be a worry, almost like they fitted new rings and left one hell of a lip in the bore, how do the rings gauge out for 60 thou over, was it bored to that or did they fit 60's after a set of 40's cos it was too worn to refit 40's, be a worry that
I'd say pull the rest too or have you already and those two are the only ones damaged - hydraulic-ing will do similar damage and 1 and 3 feed off the same inlet port hmmm ( where was all that orange gunk again) and isn't there a water galley close to that port face on the valley!
betcha it will run right after a bit of TLC but hope it doesn't cost a mortgage for that TLC

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:35pm
helicoil that stud, if he ripped the cast thread out you'll be lucky to get enough length to torque the head back down properly and it's a right bitch to have to pull the head again halfway through, another gasket and a lot of time wasted

mk3zephyr, Jan 24, 4:08pm
I,ve pulled all the slugs out and only #1 and #5 are damaged like that, There is no scoring on the bore that i can see or feel so i'm ammazed all that stayed in there and didnt destroy the bores. As for the studs they had wound them in with a heap of silicon around it and welded a nut to them so they looked the part, actually didnt do anything at all, wound a normal bolt in and it went in ok, not sloppy or anything, Was just wondering if this is where water had been leaking in causing the pistons to hydraulic, i'll have a nosey soon and have a look at where the water gallery is in relation to the dodgy studs as they were around that #5 cylinder area (sorry i mentioned it was #1 and #3 should have been #1, #3 and #5 that are toasted) all around where the dodgy head studs were

1fordluva, Jan 24, 4:48pm
Well thats very messy zephyr, did the bloke you bought it off do these, ultra awesome modifications!
Some people have no idea.
Even if it is a chev,it doesnt deserve that.

mk3zephyr, Jan 24, 5:12pm
No engine deserves that, yes it was the guy i bought it off who did these ultra high tech mods

skin1235, Jan 24, 6:01pm
you're fully hooked, a born again fully fledged addicted petrol head arn't you lol
gotta agree with the sentiment tho', that butcher would make a damn fine electrician, on 11kw feeder lines, - for about as long as he deserves
still consider helicoil, those studs used to use all the available thread in the block to allow you to torque them up correct and hold them there through a lot of pressure and heat at times, will they still do the same with either damaged or missing threads - don't go applying for that electricians job lol
you have your eyes on the job and will decide what is passable or not
and even if you use an old ring off one of them check the ring gap top to bottom in those bores, you know the drill, and what taper is acceptable, plastigauge the bearings to, that damage has been small knocks over an extended time not just one or two stalls, you may find the shells are oval now
somehow I envy you a little, a fkd up job to put right, great validation for the skills you have

skin1235, Jan 24, 6:10pm
I can imagine the words as each piece of butchery has been exposed, by now you'd be almost speechless lol
is he a club member or a mate of one - gonna be an interesting night after the next club meet if he is, a hell of a lot of them are going to take fordy's stance - even if a chev it doesn't deserve that - and he's going to find out just how many friends he has left

1fordluva, Jan 24, 6:11pm
you're fully hooked, a born again fully fledged addicted petrol head

I was born wired that way lol.
Alot my mates run chevs,I dint mind them.
You always feel a little, even for a make you may not prefer. lol

mk3zephyr, Jan 24, 6:15pm
speechless isnt the word, I'm actually gutted to be quite honest.
No he isnt a club mate but is reasonably well known in the saloon scene, Ive put the photo's up on the Macgors NZ Speedway site as well in the tech section under "Super hi tech Engine modifications" lol, quite a few people will know where the car came from

petermcg, Jan 24, 6:33pm
New set 060 flat top pistons and rings $425.00 if you get stuck finding some.

1fordluva, Jan 24, 6:35pm
^^^^ Thats the way,do the ohhhh looky here boys.
people will shy away from buying things off him .

skin1235, Jan 24, 6:47pm
easy on the gutted, wasn't your fault, any recriminations should only be about what you paid for it, not the condition of it, and after letting it be known of his workmanship I'd think he'd have problems selling pedal cars to kids in the future
take that feeling of gutted and do it right by the chev, as you say no engine deserves that, or bin it, toss it to the back of the shed as spares for the next one and start again
recheck the $budget ( we all have one of those) recheck the energy budget, and the will to put someone elses complete fkup to rights . or to rest

mk3zephyr, Jul 9, 2:09pm
have a 350 in a car i just bought, the guys didnt have the bracket that bolts on the back of the starter to the block and broke the starter housing trying to start it, question is, has anyone sucessfully got one tigged back together!, Are the starters all the same!, the one they tried looked as though it needed a spacer for the starter to engage before they broke it (managed to crash start it to get it on the trailer), next Question is are there any numbers on the block that would tell me if it is a 2 bolt or 4 bolt engine, was told it was a 4 bolt but something the previous owner said just before we left has me thinking so would like to verify what it is, and last question for now, what is the timing on a 350, this one sounds a bit out and rough sounding, Thats it for now, cheers

extrayda, Jul 9, 2:43pm
From memory I think there are some number on the back of the block (e.g.3970010) which may tell you. Some (like the example given could be either). Can't remember timing specs, but easy to find on the web somewhere.Depends if it's standard.Don't know about the starter, except there are two different bold patterns. Good luck.

rob_man, Jul 9, 2:46pm
Yep, two different starters, was it the flywheel that was different! I remember having to get the right one for one of mine.
