looking at buying a new lawnmower. Any recommendations on what to buy.wanting something that catches and mulches. Will be used for a flat small-medium sized lawn. Have been looking at the masport and victa brands. Also where is the cheapest place to buy.

when the time comes to repair bits on it if you have a reputable brand like rover, masport, lawnmaster, morrison then you will have no problems but if you have that no name chinese piece of rubbish when it breaks you will have a hard time finding spares because do you think Mitre10 will have them on the shelf! Yea, Nah and sometimes the importers dont even stock parts themselves.
Briggs and stratton or honda engine on a 'name brand' chassis is the only way to go. Also get an alloy deck because human lazyness will no doubt result in a steel deck rusting out

I would agree with previous posts. I have seen many a crap chinese brand mower become a waste of money. Buy Masport or Victa definately and you will have no issues. Buy a bunnings or a mitre 10 special and it may well crap out un-expectedly and you wont find bits. I was in my dads shop in the weekend and we ere looking at a cheap tin pot mower that was 1 of 3 he had in the workshop. All of them had lost the blade while running, luckily no one had lost a foot but its just a matter of time. Upon inspecting it seems the blade driver and blade have been fitted with 'questionable' logic. Also, some of the tin those crap things are made of is so thin you can see it flexing while running.

Anything provided it is fitted with a Briggs and Stratton four stroke engine.price will dictate whether you want steel or alloy body.

I bought a lawnmaster mulch and mow gauranteed to start first pull and it does, 190cc B&S the missus can start it, I get home from work to find the lawns mowed, dont have to take the grass down to the green waste save money there, retail about $900 a good investment, also made in NZ.

I normally buy Lawnmaster. They have B&S motors but more importantly they are the only one made in NZ.

I use a Enviromower. It has rechargable batteries. It does a good job.Only down side is you have to mow every week or two as its not designed for thick long grass.Plastic deck that wont rust,I just wipe it clean after use.No petrol, spark plugs or oil to worry about.I have owned mine for about 4 years now and only had to just replace the battery and a small repair on the bearings which I did mostly myself. They cost around $500 new. I have been there and done that with a smelly unreliable petrol mower.

Fine a for very very small lawn, but I know way too many people with them sitting in a shed unused because they have got no balls. Unreliable! Our alloy deck masport has done over 12 years hard work and hasnt missed a beat. Only serviced twice in that time.

I got about 5 years from my once new Victa mower,I always changed the oil checked/replaced spark plug etc but it basically fell apart and smoked like a train near the end of its life.We took it to the repair shop who happilly rebuilt the engine and we managed to get less than a yerar out of it before it started playing up again.I got sick of spending so much time just trying to start it up I then felt too tired to do the lawn grr. Then the starter cord broke. So i got the Enviromower and never looked back.

Another for Lawnmaster. Made in Palmy, alloy deck, Briggs and Stratton engine, good wide cut, big easy to push wheels. If you do some careful shopping round and use Bunnings 10% better than others normal price you can get a bloody good deal

Yes on the lawnmaster, made by steelfort and a bonus is they are a 19" cut. I have a mulch mower and mow my lawns every week. I have lush green lawns all year round. I am using this thread as an oppurtunity to gloat about this haha.

Masport dedicated mulcher for me. You don't need to prime or choke the newer B&S engines.

My last mower was a victa 2 stroke and it went well but in the end.well let me put it this way i lost the plot and took to it with the axe

The B&S motors on cheap no name or warehouse mowers, are actualy only a cheap chinese copy made under license. Compared to a proper B&S they are rubbish.

the flymo still does a good cut, got a rover 2stroke suzuki thats bullet proof, not a mulcher

Yes this seems to be the case. People need to be aware of this but most would assume since its a briggs, its gonna be great.

Sorry have to say no to lawnmaster, When we got robbed i had a 1500 dollar budget. So did the decent thing and brought NZ made.Well I got the Wide Cut Self Propelled 22inch cut, and has had nothing but problems since i got out of box, 1, Back wheels wouldnt turn, return to shop 40k round trip 2 After 2 mows wheels locked again""""""" 3 Self drive control started jamming, not stopping!""""" 4 Front axle collapsed """" 5 Catcher too small for mower 55 litre 6 Gear box has issues 1st 2nd 3rd return to shop again 7 Motor has heaps of compression so needs a decent pull to start.9B&S 190cc) 8 Does lose power in long grass as its driving and cutting.
Steelfort didnt want to know as i have complained.
So for now putting up with it, Had fr over a year now.
