how did you get that starter out in the end mrfxit!

pge, Jan 4, 7:01pm
Doncha just HATE the ones who leave you dangli.

dent, Jan 4, 7:21pm
Somehow ive agreed to replace one so any tips greatly accepted.

mrfxit, Jan 4, 8:47pm
Yea it's out, just looking for a cheap set of bush's for it & not haven't any luck sourcing for less then a reco starter (which tells you that the wholesale price of the parts is bugger all)

All battery/ air cleaner parts removed to expose the left side of the engine as much as reasonable.
Nimble fingers with ring spanner to remove battery cables off starter & remove holding bolts

Remove right wheel & disconnect steering arm/ turn steering fully right afterwards.
Somewhere between on top/ underneath & through the wheel arch hole, you should be able to move the starter to & through the right side wheel arch hole next to the steering arm.
it's a gentle twist/ turn /pull to get it out

Theres always a little more thats not explained but thats the basics.

you CAN'T get the inlet manifold off . don't even think about it.

dent, Jan 6, 10:59am
thanks for that will report back on how I go.

dent, Jan 10, 9:00pm
got the starter out. Took the inlet manifold off to expose starter then out it came.

ema1, Jan 10, 9:18pm
Damn .it has to go right back in there .hate to say!
I would imagine wifey could be talked around into getting a different better designed/engineered car .am I right!

dent, Jan 10, 9:23pm
Coulda been worse I guess. There must be some with diffrent manifolds from what people were saying about not being able to remove one bolt.

ema1, Jan 10, 9:27pm
Probably quicker to just drop the whole engine out of the car!
damn there's no way I'd attempt anything like that now.too damn old and total lack of nimbleness .me! ha ha.

dent, Jan 10, 9:30pm
nah wouldnt drop the engine out. Took me two hours to get the manifolds off and starter out.

amber.gumdrop, Jan 11, 3:06pm
Thats why I am useful as I have smaller hands than most men. but dont have the wrist strength that they seem to have so have to have help torquing bolts :P

ginga4lyfe, Jan 11, 6:19pm
100% the truth haha, iv always wandered if it would be possible to remove the rear engine mount bolt and the gear box mount and the other engine mount to tilt the engine towards the radiator, but. the transfer case would get caught on the firewall/drive shaft tunnel, wouldn't it!

dent, Jan 11, 7:34pm
Yeah all were saying dont try to remove the manifold its not possible. But I tried anyway and it worked. Bit fidley but oh well.

dent, Jan 15, 2:53pm
Have got the avenir back together and all runing well. Six hours to replace the starter motor with removing the manifolds.

akaniva, Jan 15, 4:43pm
That's nuts. On something sensible like an old school Datsun 1600 the starter motor comes out in five minutes. In fact the old Nissan/Datsuns must have been designed by mechanics as everything was so accessible and simple to get at.

mrfxit, Mar 3, 10:19am
NEVER ever in my long history of automotive work can I remember a job as fricked up /barstidised as pulling the starter motor of a 96 import bluebird attessa (sr20de awd).
Theres NO room to get it from underneath apart from 1 x 3" gap at the wheel side of the motor/gearbox EXTREAME ends
The inlet manifold has just about every conceivable pipe/cable possible ,. bolted to the underside or back of it.
The left side is totally full of pipes & cables running around the side to the back of the motor (big & small)

Should have just got the garage to pull the motor out & do both jobs at the same time (timing chain/coveroil leak & startor motor.

and wait for the costomer to complain about the bill lol

mrfxit, Mar 3, 10:39am

3tomany, Mar 3, 10:57am

Not enuff sorry.
Need a description of something harder & piggier to passify me a little.

mrfxit, Mar 3, 11:18am
All the visable & feelable bolts are off the manifold
Same for pipes & cables/ injector rail/ fuel lines/water pipes
Still won't budge

IF. I can get it off, I have this feeling theres a few cables etc that will be tied up in different places rather then trying to bolt them up again to their supports.

3tomany, Mar 3, 11:22am
hope youre going to garantee this repair them indoors will make life hard if it fails

directorylist, Mar 3, 11:23am
Swapping a clutch master, would be a simple job dont you think!

But no, someone in their infinite wisdom decided that why put the bolt through the master and screw into the firewall, when you can put it through the firewall and screw into the master.

We effectively has to pull out a large section of dash, remove the drivers seat and disassemble 1/2 of the pedal boxjust to be able to get my club like hand up under the dash far enough to get to the bolts.

As per the haines manual, replacement was the reverse of removal
