As with any company or business - if you have purchased something based on misinformation or by an error from a staff member (who in this case sounds like they were either a newbie, undertrained or misinformed by their management - or possibly just an incompetent employee!) - then I am sure that a reputable business such as the AA is more than likely to reimburse or refund you. They do have about '1 million members' so they must be doing something right irrespective of the minority on here!

* Overpriced bottled water is a goldmine * Prius's sell like hotcakes * Winston Peters is back in Parliament
On mass, people are fundamentally stupid. Like I said the AA know how to market themselves and make money. however they offer little of value.
Also, its not a case of "may reimburse you" they HAVE to its the law.

You can get 4 cents a liter off at Caltex just by showing them any supermarket fuel docket. How much of an idiot do you feel like right now!

4c/litre LOL, who even bothers with that either, it isn't even 2% of your bill peoples! You're all being sucked in by corporate consumer manipulation, the only ones I've ever bothered to use are the 20 or 25c ones, at least thats a 10% or thereabouts reduction, which is good if you feel like stocking up on up to 150L worth of 98 for the toys.Same with this Flybuys crap, the AA's latest swindle also I see uses discounts/rewards that expire rather quickly, which to me is a form of theft.Has anyone else noticed that these "rewards partners" by and large tend to be the least price competitive retailers out there! What little discount you are getting through fuel dockets they are getting straight back through overinflated prices.

I just got 28 cpl off at BP. 20cpl for getting a $45 WOF at VINZ and the BP 8cpl.Total discount was $8.51. On a whole year of AA rewards, I only got $9.00 off my renewal. Smartfuel is a lot better.
romulan7,

I went into my regular servo and got 15 cents discounts do everytime! No smartfuel or supermarket dockets either.
Given we spend about$5000 more or less on fuel per year saves us around $375 per year!AA Membership and car rego paid for the year :)

There was an article about the smart fuel card in the chch star last week. Pretty much just another con, sure you save money, but you have to spend spend spend in order to make a tiny amount on your next fill up. Until the AA align themselves with a bank or a supermarket its a have. How much of the partner companies does the AA own or have a large share interest in! Fly Buys are still the biggest waste of time though. Why would anyone bother!

I used to think like that, too. However, F/B is totally free and we use the points for presents for our kids. Costs us nothing to join or participate.

It's worth joining the AA for their magazine. Full of neat recipies, some lovely feel good human interest stories, garden ramble and overseas travel stories, and even an occasional article about cars. Best thing they ever did was get a female editor.

I have one of the AA Smart Cards and every time I fill up at local Caltex I get the option of either getting 4c a litre off then and there or a 4c a litre build up on my card each time I get $40 or more fuel (no less) that I can redeem the accrued later prior to May 2012 than it expires and starts all over again. At present i have 20c per litre accrued from the 5 fills I have had since inception and I plan going on holiday in April and I'll use the accrued amount then on a tank fill plus a couple of cans extra. It's a form of saving towards my holiday I guess. Admittedly there is some confusion from various angles over the whole scheme but it's completely understandable that lots of folk in NZ don't have the brain power to see what it's all about and that goes for some of the uninformed reps of AA mentioned here which AA should "stump up" for if it's proved they are in the wrong. Same goes for the "participating" outfits that don't honor the scheme, just goes to show the flaws and dodgy outfits that need ironed out quick smart(pun) if it's going to succeed in the way intended. Sort of weeds out the rouges from the honest doesn't it.

Both systems operate in a similar manner particularly if you are NOT a AA member. both require that you swipe or barcode the respective cards and both must have to reach purchase $ thresholds before they activate. Just that the Fly Buys have at this point a far bigger coverage of participating sales outlets, both have differing thresholds at the various outlets also. It's a competition thing. Supermarkets do their own cents off per litre of fuel now, by aligning it with the AA Smart Card scheme would make it simpler for them and in doing so puts the responsibility on the card holder to claim the cent per litre from the supermarkets.right. If you forget .your problem, but presently with the supermarkets issuing their own discounts per litre of fuel from participating fuel outlets in a similar vain the responsibility still rest with you presenting the voucher in the long run, you forget.your problem. Ultimately it's up to the purchasing customer to present his/her card or voucher to accrue or redeem points or cents whatever is on offer to their advantage.

Pak n' save is BP and caltex. Countdown you save at shell. Spend $150 and save 10 cpl. Mobil and gull are the cheapest at the moment they haven't got into the fuel dockets con. The Mobil mart do need a overhaul they are being run like diaries.
