How much does it actually cost to hire oxy acetylene bottles from boc !

around $1 per day, per bottle + the cost of gas. Not worth it unless you are using it all the time, or making money from it.

wow thats expensive, wanted to do some home projects doesn't seem worth it.

Keep an eye out for a cheap set incl owner bottles. You can still get them filled at Supagas and its incredibly cheap over time that way and super handy to have in the workshop.

Will they test and refill the old BOC bottles!

I am pretty sure they do. They tested and refilled my fathers set the other day and as far as I am aware they were old BOC owner bottles.

Supergas WILL fill any OWNER certed bottles NOT allowed to fill anybody elses hire bottles now. Proviso: . Boc kicked up a stink about Supergas, not sure about Airliquid *** Boc & Airliquid BOTH have the list of "owner" bottles for cross reference of serial numbers. Boc tries to tell you ALL bottles are theres even if not stamped with their tag & the staff generally deny or saythe list isn't available to staff. Airliquid don't have a problem checking the list for you

So how do Supergas decide whether or not they are old BOC "owner" bottles (ie leased from BOC/NZIG in 1931)!
From labels! Stampings! Color! Tags!

When you say "hire" bottles would all hire bottles be incurring a monthly fee anyway! I have never had any BOC bottles so I don't know exactly how the older ones worked. BTW, BOC are a bit like Telecom, instead of being competitive and fair they just try and buy everyone else up and bully the consumer around. The attitude of many of their staff is also disgusting to say the least. I won't go near them on principle.

Hire is calculated "Per month". always has been for domestic ppl (as far as I know)
From memory, Boc stamp the bottles with (wait for it).>>> . .>>>> BOC At the very least, it will be stamped on the neck tag but suspect that would only be with the older bottles. Seem to remember some of the older bottles (Pre boc) with NZIG stamped ON the bottle.
Telecoms getting a LOT better in the last 5 years but have been tarnished again by the outsourcing saga.

9 years ago . I got given an old set of hire bottles that had't been used in (frick knows how many years ago before) & I sent them off to be tested/ certed/ filled , (as ya do). Cost me about $440 for the 2 x large bottles (3.4M acet & matching oxy) including the fill & a new acet tap Got the oxy redone a couple of months ago & it was $400 just for the ONE bottle (tho that was with a new tap)
When I first gone my own set, I HAD been paying close to $400 PER YEAR in rent to Boc for 2 small bottles that needed filling about every 4 to 6 months

BOC say the Dx bottles were never ownedonly exchanged & had to return themfor scrapping& would have to hire new bottles. Theiving pricks .I sold mine .Try hire centres fordaily hire, if they do it.

Had same as well so I simply held onto the oxy bottle and told em to keep the acetylene and use LPG bottle from the barby in its place. Had to get a reg for that but halved my rental from $350 / year to $175 (Excludes filling)

I still have my receipts for my Dx bottle's,And they still tried to take them back; Got the bottles back, but they would not fill them .So I have a set doing nothing.

kiwi-2 Could you post an image of your receipt for the Dx bottles! You must have bought them from NZIG around 1975. When BOC withdrew the leased Dx bottles a couple of years ago, I tried to find my receipt, to see what the actual deal was back in the day, but the receipt is, of course, long gone. According to BOC they always retained ownership of the Dx bottles and us clients only had the use of them for, say, 20 years. The profit of these gas companies comes largely from the hire of the cylinders, so you can see why BOC were keen to withdraw the leased Dx bottles. It seemed to me that BOC charged a very high price for filling the Dxs to compensate for not getting any rental from them. I hear the stories about BOC, particularly from ex-employees, but, apart from their high prices, I always found them to be pleasant.

aren,t boc bretherens!, hence the rip off charges.

So in other words, the two Dx bottles that I have here (not paying rental on either) that don't have either 'BOC' or 'NZIG' stamped on them are likely to be fillable by Supagas! Can Supagas recert them!
Alternatively, is there any outfit here in the South Island that will sell bottles and refill them and of so does anyone have a vague idea of the costs!
The whole saga is a complete bloody rort and unfortunately BOC sell some product that no-one else does. But they've had more than their few pennies out of me over the years.

All the gas & bottle suppliers have a list of serial numbers of OWNER bottles. The serials have to be checked before they are allowed to be filled.

If you only want to use a gas plant occasionally check out what the local hire centre might be able to do for you, or else if you want to use it regularly over a long period of time, buy some brand new cylinders of your own from a certain trader on here and use Supergas when refilling. The point of all this is making sure that BOC get no business from you whatsoever. They've behaved in a greedy and monopolistic way for far too long and also behave like pressurised gas, and the cylinders it comes in, is some sort of a banned substance like cocaine that should only be available to those that are willing to pay through the nose for it and only available via certain channels only, ie THEM .Don't fall for it.

Which law compels them to check! Or is it some sort of agreement between them all - I wonder about that given that they are in competition with each other.!

With acetylene! Found their site but can't see any mention of gas products.
